John Quick “Jack” Stevens Jr.

John Quick “Jack” Stevens Jr., 90, of Sparta, passed away April 18, 2016, in Murfreesboro.

Born May 12, 1925, in Franklin, New Jersey, he was the son John Stevens and Elizabeth Mitchell .

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He participated in nine landings and three sea battles in the South Pacific.

Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by his parents, and two wives, Lillian Hardick and Clara June Space.

Survivors include his daughters, Faith Smith, of Harrison, Fawn Franzese, of Ardsley, New York; brother, William Stevens and wife Marjorie, of Sparta; nephew, William Stevens Jr., of Sparta; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.


Crash near entrance of Burgess Falls State Park

North End Volunteer Fire Department, Sparta-White County Rescue Squad, White County Emergency Medical Services, Tennessee Highway Patrol and White County Sheriff Department have been dispatched to a crash with injuries near the entrance of Burgess Falls State Park. Further information is not known at this time.

Nicolas David Culver, 30 of Sparta, passed away April 20, 2016, at Erlanger Medical System, in Chattanooga.

Mr. Culver was born April 5, 1986, in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was a forklift operator at a distribution plant in Smithville.

He is preceded in death by his grandmother, Gladys Culver.

Survivors include his mother Kim Culver (Greg Matheney), of Sparta; brother, Shaun Culver; sister, Loretta Carrara; grandfather, Larry Culver; and uncles, Larry (Tammy) Culver Jr., David (Chris) Culver, Mike (Renee) Culver.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m., April 22, 2016, at Hunter Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after 11 a.m., April 22, at the funeral home.

Trooper Groce receives award for restraint usage and DUI enforcement

Trooper Jacob Groce has recently received departmental recognition for enforcement in restraint usage and also for impaired driving for the first quarter of 2016. District Captain R.C. Christian says it is extremely rare for a trooper to excel in both areas within a single quarter. Christian reports that the Cookeville District currently has a 33% unrestrained fatality rate. Last year, the district had the highest in the state. “It is humbling when you see a fatality that could have been prevented simply by wearing a seat belt,” Christian states.

Shred-It Day, May 6

WoodmenLife Family Fraternity and Boy Scout Troop #175 of Sparta are sponsoring the 6th Annual Shred-It Day, 3:30-5:30 p.m., Friday, May 6, 2016. The shredding unit will be in the parking lot at Floyd’s Cash Saver Foods, 542 W. Bockman Way, in Sparta. The event is for families in the White County area to bring any documents that need to be shredded and disposed of.  In case of  rain, the event will be rescheduled. The event is free-of-charge.

Wenda’s Warriors fish fry

Wenda’s Warriors will be hosting a Relay For Life fish fry, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, April 23, 2016, at 278 Oakwood St. You have the choice of either a fish plate or a fish sandwich. Luminarias are also available. Relay For Life is 5-10 p.m., Friday, May 13, on Liberty Square, in downtown Sparta. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Support Special Olympics

Local and area volunteers and supporters of Special Olympics would like to invite you and your business to celebrate the spirit of Special Olympics this year. The theme is “It Starts with Us…Sports, Respect, Inclusion.”

During the month of April, they will be selling t-shirts with this theme. On April 29, all area businesses in the Upper Cumberland are encouraged to wear them. The mission is to raise awareness of Sports, Respect, and Inclusion in all aspects of Special Olympics. Please consider purchasing t-shirts for your employees or ask them to purchase one to wear to support Upper Cumberland Special Olympics. Shirts are $15.

Scarlett is WCHS Scholar Athlete of the Week

This week’s Scholar Athlete of the Week, which is presented by Gary Maxwell Insurance in conjunction with White County High School, is Will Scarlett.

Coach Doug Dodson commented on his senior soccer player, “This is a well-deserved honor for Will. He’s a fine young man who has played for me for four years. He’s a captain. He’s just a good leader. He can be vocal if need be, but most of the time he leads by example. He’s a very intelligent player who plays smart and plays hard.”

Tuesday’s spring sports update

Tuesday was a busy afternoon for the White County High School spring sports teams with all of them being in action on the road.

The Warrior baseball team defeated Stone Memorial 12-1 to make it two in a row over the Panthers.

The Warriorette softball team split a doubleheader at Rhea County.  The host team won the first game 5-2 and the Warriorettes came back with a 9-1 win in the second game of the twinbill.

The WCHS tennis teams were defeated at Rhea County.

The Warrior soccer team was shut out 6-0 by Cookeville.
