Van Buren County High School Class of 1961 get-together

Van Buren County High School Class of 1961 will have a get-together beginning at noon, Saturday, May 21, 2016, at The Landing, 868 Seamons Rd., in Rock Island. Lunch will be ordered from the menu – pay for your own meal. Please notify friends and family who may live out-of-town or out-of-state. TVA issues temporary river traffic advisory on Caney Fork River

Tennessee Valley Authority is issuing a river traffic caution advisory during transmission line work near Rock Island State Park.

On Monday, April 25, 2016, TVA transmission line construction crews will be removing a section of power line that crosses the Caney Fork River. Work is scheduled to begin around 9 a.m. CDT and should take about three hours to complete.

During this time, recreational kayakers and canoers should avoid the section of the river between the Beach Road. Boat Ramp and Great Falls Dam.

TVA personnel and state park rangers will be monitoring various access trails and the shoreline to help the public avoid the work zone. Notices … Read More

Sonic Cruise In and Sock Hop

Come join in the fun for a night that will take you back to the 1950’s at the Sonic Cruise In and Sock Hop, beginning at 5 p.m., Saturday, May 21, 2016. There will be an Antique Car Cruise In and music by Four on the Floor. Come dressed for the part and dance the night away under the lights of Oldham Theater in the heart of downtown Sparta, on Liberty Square. Admission is free. Life Force, Life Star called to crash on Crossville Highway

Sparta-White County Rescue Squad, BonDeCroft Volunteer Fire Department, Eastland Volunteer Fire Department, White County Sheriff Department and White County Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to a crash with injuries involving a pickup truck and tractor trailer in the area of 10407 Crossville Highway at approximately 5:25 a.m. A Life Force Medical Helicopter also responded to transport a patient to Erlanger for medical treatment. A Life Star medical helicopter responded to transport a second patient to UT Knoxville for treatment. Further information will be released as it becomes available.

Warriors start week off with district win

The Warrior baseball team got the week off on the right foot picking up a District 6AAA win on Monday at Culley Field in Sparta.

WCHS played host to Stone Memorial and garnered an 11-2 district win over the visiting Panthers.

After falling behind 2-0 after the top half of the first inning, the Warriors answered with five runs in the bottom half of the frame and never looked back.

Trenton Hodges got the start on the mound and picked up the complete-game victory.

Mayor and county executive sign proclamations recognizing RSVP and Foster Grandparent programs

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Foster Grandparent Program took the opportunity to meet with Sparta Mayor Jeff Young and White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson to tell them about programs that are available in their community.

They discussed how the programs benefit Sparta and White County. Young and Robinson signed proclamations recognizing the programs for all the services provided to the community

Mayor and County Day of Recognition for National Service is a nationwide bipartisan effort to recognize the positive impact of national service in counties, to thank those who serve, and to encourage resident to give back to their communities.

Firefighters respond to Southard Road grass fire

North End Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Derek Wilson reports that on April 16, the department responded to a grass fire at 1424 Southard Road. Upon arrival of firefighters, it had spread but was contained with small damage done to property. According to Wilson, the fire was accidental. “With weather warming up and everyone wanting to clean their properties, please remember if you are burning, you must still obtain a burn permit until May 15 through the Division of Forestry,” Wilson stated.


Thomas Everett “Turtle” Rowland III

Thomas Everett “Turtle” Rowland III, 66, of Sparta, passed away April 18, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Rowland was born Aug. 24, 1949, in White County, to Thomas Everett Rowland Jr. and Mary Doris Little Rowland.

He retired from the State of Tennessee Probation and Parole Office and was a former White County Circuit Court Clerk.

He was preceded in death by his mother and his wife, Cathy Cantrell Rowland.

Survivors include his two sons Rett Rowland and wife Shayna, of Sparta, Mason Rowland, of Sparta; grandchildren,     Lyla Rowland and Gage Rowland; father, Tom Rowland, of Sparta; and brother, Joe Rowland, of Nashville

Elma Lou Hale

Elma Lou Hale, 85, of Spencer, passed away April 17, 2016, at her home.

Mrs. Hale was born April 2, 1931, in Spencer, the daughter of Mike Yates and Alma Sullivan Yates.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., April 21, 2016, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Long Cemetery, in Van Buren County. The family will receive friends 1-9 p.m., April 20, 2016, and 8 a.m.-2 p.m., April 21, at the funeral home.

Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
