Old quilts wanted

England finishes 11th in the state

A little over two months ago, Jade England had never thrown a shot put competitively when the WCHS track and field team began their season in March

Fast forward to May and the WCHS sophomore finished the season 11th in Class 3A in the state of Tennessee and now holds the school record.

England stood toe to toe with some of the strongest female athletes in the state of Tennessee and showed she belonged. The AAA shot put event was held Thursday morning at the Dean A. Hayes Soccer/Track and Field Stadium on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.

Crosland falls to eventual state champion

When the brackets were released for the TSSAA Class 3A boys’ singles tennis tournament, everyone knew that Cole Crosland had a tough draw.

His first round opponent in the eight-man field was fellow junior, Sam Fischer, from Brentwood High School. Fischer was ranked the top player in the state and among the top 100 in the country. He proved why at the TSSAA Spring Fling taking the state title and winning all three of his matches in two straight sets.

Carl Steven Jones, 65, of the Hickory Valley community of White County, passed away May 28, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Jones was born March 11, 1951, in Sparta, to Wade Jones Sr. and Lora Hicks Jones.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Wade Jones Jr. and four sisters, Jean Jones, Lorene Hodge, Linda Lewis and Sue Jones.

Billie Ruth Carter, 56, of Sparta, passed away May 28, 2016, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sunday, Jan. 18, 1960, in Sparta, she was the daughter of Billy Seibers and Emma Jean Cox Daniels.

One of her greatest joys in life was watching her granddaughters play ball.

Ms. Carter was preceded in death by her mother, Emma Jean Daniels; stepfather, Roger Daniels; sister, Wanda Howard and her husband Curtis.

“Shattered” hosting free concert

“Shattered” will be in concert at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Sparta Amphitheater, in a salute to the troops. Admission is free. There will be a drawing for a Fender Bullet Stratocaster guitar. All proceeds benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Concessions will be provided by Caribbean Cafe. Radio station 93.7 will be on-site with a remote broadcast, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sponsors for the event are: City of Sparta, Edd Rogers Chevrolet, Edd Rogers Valley Ford, Don Randolph Associates, Bill Loos and Associates Doc’s Vape Escape, Caribbean Cafe and Xceed Screen Printing.

“Shattered” band members are Ron “Fuzzy” Phifer, Greg England, Jim Seidler and Steve Duncan.

Mary Ann O’Brian, 98, of Spencer, passed away May 26, 2016, at her residence.

Mrs. O’Brian was born Nov. 27, 1917, in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of John Stein and Caroline Then.

She was a precious lady and will be missed by all

The family has chosen cremation. A memorial service will be 2 p.m., June 4, 2016, at her residence, at 731 Walling Rd., in Spencer.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Velda Ann England Cope

Velda Ann England Cope, 61, of the Peeled Chestnut Community, passed away May 26, 2016 at the Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown, in Nashville.

Mrs. Cope was born Feb. 14, 1955, in White County, to Franklin England and Treva Lee Young England.

She was a dietary aid at Life Care Center of Sparta and had worked at many different places through the years. She was a Christian woman and proud of her faith.

Mrs. Cope was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Lavaughn Franklin “Lynn” Young; husband, Clyde Cope; father of her children, Ronnie Lee Young; and brother, Roger Dale Young.
