Mary Ann O’Brian, 98, of Spencer, passed away May 26, 2016, at her residence.

Mrs. O’Brian was born Nov. 27, 1917, in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of John Stein and Caroline Then.

She was a precious lady and will be missed by all

The family has chosen cremation. A memorial service will be 2 p.m., June 4, 2016, at her residence, at 731 Walling Rd., in Spencer.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Velda Ann England Cope

Velda Ann England Cope, 61, of the Peeled Chestnut Community, passed away May 26, 2016 at the Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown, in Nashville.

Mrs. Cope was born Feb. 14, 1955, in White County, to Franklin England and Treva Lee Young England.

She was a dietary aid at Life Care Center of Sparta and had worked at many different places through the years. She was a Christian woman and proud of her faith.

Mrs. Cope was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Lavaughn Franklin “Lynn” Young; husband, Clyde Cope; father of her children, Ronnie Lee Young; and brother, Roger Dale Young.

“Shattered” hosting free concert

“Shattered” will be in concert at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Sparta Amphitheater, in a salute to the troops. Admission is free. There will be a drawing for a Fender Bullet Stratocaster guitar. All proceeds benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Concessions will be provided by Caribbean Cafe. Radio station 93.7 will be on-site with a remote broadcast, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sponsors for the event are: City of Sparta, Edd Rogers Chevrolet, Edd Rogers Valley Ford, Don Randolph Associates, Bill Loos and Associates Doc’s Vape Escape, Caribbean Cafe and Xceed Screen Printing.

“Shattered” band members are Ron “Fuzzy” Phifer, Greg England, Jim Seidler and Steve Duncan.


Crash on McMinnville Highway, in Walling

South Group Volunteer Fire Departments, Sparta-White County Rescue Squad and White County Sheriff Department have been dispatched to a truck crash near 11248 McMinnville Highway, in Walling. A truck is reportedly overturned onto its side. It is unknown at this time if there are any injuries.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program hosts recognition event

On May 20, 2016, during National Senior Corps Week, the LBJ&C Retired and Senior Volunteer Program held its annual Recognition Event at the Cookeville Community Center for its volunteers.

The volunteers were recognized for the service they had given during this past year. They served in White County in food distribution centers (helping to provide food to those in need), the blood bank, nursing homes (visiting patients, playing Bingo with them and singing to them), the hospital (helping in the gift shop with the intent to provide scholarships to graduating high school students), the retired teachers association (also with the intent helping with scholarships for the graduating high … Read More


“Expositor Inquires” will help answer questions about community

The Expositor is publishing a monthly article that will give residents an opportunity to have their concerns answered.

The article, The Expositor Inquires, asks that the community submit questions or concerns they may have about something going on in White County.

The Expositor will be accepting questions about all topics, including city and county government, status on construction projects, new businesses and updates on news stories.

Help counsel others about Medicare

SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) is a federally grant-funded program that helps the Medicare population and their caregivers locally by offering free, unbiased information and counseling. SHIP is seeking professional volunteers to help provide local one-on-one benefits counseling in their own communities. Volunteers are trained on Medicare-focused benefits through a two-day course and are also cross-trained on Medicare fraud, waste and abuse through the SMP (Senior Medicare Patrol) Program.

Upcoming training will take place 9 a.m.-4 p.m., July 25, 2016, at the Upper Cumberland Development District. Volunteers are asked to give two to three days a month and will feel richly rewarded through helping the aged and … Read More


Knights of Columbus host fishing day for Pacesetters

Knights of Columbus members took several individuals from Pacesetters of White County to Lake Paula, in Sparta, and treated them to a day of fishing. Each member of Pacesetters received fishing gear and assistance in fishing in the local lake. The fishing participates received a certificate. Knights cooked hamburgers and hot dogs, and Knights’ wives provided potato salad and baked beans for a complete meal for everyone. The weather cooperated, and it was a great day and appreciated by the members and the staff of Pacesetters. About 25 people participated in the event.
