YMCA Memorial Day pool special

Sparta YMCA will have a Memorial Day special for the pool. First 100 children under 18 years old are FREE. Everyone else will be $1, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Contact Tasha at the YMCA for more information, (931) 836-3330. The event is sponsored by The River Sparta.


Caney Fork Electric Annual Membership Appreciation Lunch

Caney Fork Electric held its Annual Membership Lunch, on May 24, 2016. According to Caney Fork representatives, 800-1,000 individuals attend the event each year and enjoy a plate lunch of BBQ sandwiches, chips and drinks, while also enjoying fellowship with friends and neighbors.


Almyra Methodist Church celebrates 122nd anniversary on June 5

Alymra United Methodist Church will celebrate its 122nd homecoming with a potluck meal, on June 5, 2016. Worship service is 11 a.m., with lunch beginning approximately at noon. There will be singing after the meal. Bro. Paul Allen, pastor, and the congregation invite everyone is invited.

In 1884, William Doan, an early school teacher in this area, gave the acre of ground upon which Almyra United Methodist Church was built. The existing church and the school that once stood in that community were both named “Almyra” in honor of his wife, Almyra McConnell Doan.

Commission approves numerous resolutions during May meeting

White County commissioners were presented with numerous resolutions during the May meeting of the legislative body, all of which were accepted and approved.

The commissioners:

  • Approved resolution to amend the general fund to correct a budgeting error made when calculating commissions collected by the trustee for the county general fund: $20,000 was moved from the unassigned fund balance to miscellaneous
  • Approved resolution establishing rates of pay for White County Election Commission and poll officials:

Election Day official: $85 per day

Election Day officer: $95 per day

Machine technician: $85 per day

Nursing home voting official: $85 per day

Jail voting official: $85 per day

Everyday Heroes plans continue for June 18 event at fairgrounds

Moeller Marine employees have been planning the Everyday Heroes Fun Day at the Fairgrounds, set for June 18, for some time now as a fundraiser for the volunteer emergency services agencies in White County, and plans are starting to fall into place, as donations begin to roll in and participating vendors and sponsors sign up.

During a May 19 meeting of the event committee, Hana Nash, of Moeller, announced that Tennessee Highway Patrol’s rollover truck would be one of several demonstrations at the event, along with Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the Army National Guard, Life Force, and fire and rescue trucks from several county agencies.

Drugs and fake trunk floorboard lead to the arrest of two suspects

Sparta Police officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for illegal window tint that led to the arrest of two individuals on several drug charges, according to an arrest warrant filed by Patrolman Nick Dunn.

The incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on May 22.

Dunn reports that he observed a black Nissan Maxima with what he believed to be illegal window tint and a inoperable tag light traveling on Mose Drive. Dunn initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Old Smithville Highway and Medic Drive.

Dunn reports that Jennifer L. Kemp, 41, of Sparta, was the driver of the vehicle.

Chamber hopes to close budget gap with fun events, merchandise

The Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors continues to make strides to increase membership and close their budget deficit, by planning an event for the community that they hope will raise excitement, membership and funds for the Chamber.

The plans for a new event took shape during the May 24 meeting. While discussing the calendar of upcoming events, which includes a new member orientation luncheon on June 14 and a business before hours event on Aug. 11, assistant Jenny Wilson said the Chamber needs a sponsor to host a business after hours event.

Lawrence “Larry” Bernice Beck

Lawrence “Larry” Bernice Beck, 95, of Sparta, passed away May 25, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Beck was born Jan. 17, 1921, in Asheville, North Carolina, to Burgin Beck and Lucille Vesey Beck.

Mr. Beck moved to Nashville at the age of 11 and lived there until he graduated from East High School, in 1938. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in July 1942 and married Rosalie Lankford, on Aug. 16, of the same year. In 1949, while stationed in Seattle, Washington, their only daughter, Carol Beck (Boston), was born.

He served his country as an electronic field engineer and was a communications specialist for the Army … Read More

Thursday’s edition of the TSSAA State Championships, known as the Spring Fling, has just a bit of a maroon and gray tint.

White County High School has two athletes contending for Spring Fling titles and, as fate would have it, both will be competing at 9 a.m. Thursday at two different venues in Murfreesboro.

Cole Crosland, a junior, is making his second consecutive trip to the state individual singles tennis tournament and will take on Brentwood’s Sam Fischer at 9 a.m. at Old Fort Park.

Edward Lee Christian

Edward Lee Christian, 84, of Sparta, passed away May 21, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Christian was born Dec. 21, 1931, in Buffalo Valley, the son of Vergil Christian and Dimple Holman.

Survivors include two sons, Leonard Christian and wife Annette, of Madison Heights, Michigan, Lawrence Christian and wife Feleshia, of Sparta; daughter, Dawn Kass and husband Evan, of South Haven, Michigan; grandchildren, Patrick, Brett, Mindy, Shalene; great-grandchild, Reagan; brother, Charles Allen, of South Carolina; and three sisters, Jewell Holt, of Nashville, Reba Dawson, of Nashville, and Margaret Hackney, of Nashville.

“Expositor Inquires” will help answer questions about community

The Expositor is publishing a monthly article that will give residents an opportunity to have their concerns answered.

The article, The Expositor Inquires, asks that the community submit questions or concerns they may have about something going on in White County.

The Expositor will be accepting questions about all topics, including city and county government, status on construction projects, new businesses and updates on news stories.
