Putnam County woman charged with TennCare fraud

A Putnam County woman is charged with TennCare fraud for falsely reporting her income in order to obtain TennCare.

The Office of Inspector General, with the assistance of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, today announced, on June 16, 2016, the arrest of Clara Clark Shockley, 34, of Cookeville.

Shockley is charged with TennCare fraud and theft of services over $10,000. Charges accuse her of falsely reporting her income to the state in order to obtain over $10,000 in TennCare healthcare and prescription drug benefits she was not entitled to receive.

TennCare fraud is a Class E felony carrying a sentence of up to two years in prison. Theft … Read More

White County, SR-84 repair of bridge over Calfkiller River (LM 1.58): Work on this project continues. The contractor has completed Phase 1 of the bridge repair and will begin work on Phase 2 during this period. All motorists should use caution and be alert to construction equipment and vehicles on the project. Estimated project completion date is July 2016. TN unemployment rate 4.1% for May

Fifth consecutive month the rate has declined

Tennessee Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner Burns Phillips announced today the Tennessee preliminary unemployment rate for May was 4.1 percent, two-tenths of a percentage point decrease from the April revised rate of 4.3 percent. The U.S. preliminary rate for May was 4.7 percent, down three-tenths of a percentage point from the previous month.

Over the past year, Tennessee’s unemployment rate decreased from 5.8 percent to 4.1 percent while the national rate declined from 5.5 percent to 4.7 percent.

Total nonfarm employment decreased 13,400 jobs from April to May. The largest decreases occurred in government, leisure/hospitality, & professional/business services.

Misty R. McDonald, 84, of Doyle, passed away June 16, 2016, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Wild animals return to Summer Reading Program

Bob Tarter of Natural History Education Company returned to Sparta, bringing several animals to demonstrate to the children participating in the White County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. He also taught the children about the animals’ habitats, the importance of their species, and interesting facts about their anatomy. The White County Superintendent’s Office was on hand to hand out free books to children, so they will have something to read over the summer. Click here for more photos.

Audrey Mae Yates, 94, passed away June 15, 2016, at the Life Care Center of Sparta. S

Mrs. Yates was born Nov. 10, 1921, in Van Buren County, to Simon and Lizzie Mae Sparkman Hodges.

She was a member of Spencer First Baptist Church and Spencer FCE Club. She was an avid gardener and considered all her friends special to her. She was a factory supervisor and retired from Cole Apparel. She worked for 10 years for the Van Buren County School System at the high school cafeteria. Mrs. Yates’ home was always open to her family, friends and neighbors, making everyone feel welcome.
