White County student attends national leadership forum

Samuel Houston Hillis, of Sparta, attended Harding University’s 60th annual National Leadership Forum in Searcy, Arkansas, June 5-10. Samuel was sponsored by White County Farm Bureau as a delegate to the Forum, which is presented by the University’s American Studies Institute.

Area Farm Bureaus and civic clubs selected the delegates, who were instructed in the values and qualities of leadership and learned how our country has developed its leaders.

Young people attending the Forum were taught about comparative economic systems and ways to defend our society and its freedoms. They heard presentations by such leaders as Dean Sikes, Spirit of America Foundation, who addressed “Discover Your Destiny,” John … Read More


WCHS Class of 1941 holds reunion

White County High School Class of 1941 recently held their 75th reunion. Those present were Willie Conley Sandefur, Joe Goodwin, Marie Hutchings Howard, Katherine Kimsey Secrist and “Pinkie” Tubb Hill. The group honored two of their classmates, Pauline Floyd Hickey and John Erwin, who passed away this past year and had been faithful to attend the reunions. We funded 35 spay/neuter surgeries during May, bringing our total for 2016 to 209. We hope that now that school is out, graduation celebrations are over, and the busy month of May has ended, our numbers will increase.   The good news is that between Jan-May 2016 the Cookeville Spay/Neuter Clinic performed surgery on 265 White County animals. Only 127 of those surgeries were funded by our organization. That means that owners of 138 animals either covered the entire cost of their surgeries or took advantage of the many specials the clinic has offered these past few months. Zuehsow and Gravely announce upcoming wedding

Matthew and Janise Libby and Richard and Jo Ann Gravely are proud to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their children, Laura Elizabeth Zuehsow and Dr. Gary Thomas Gravely.

The bride-elect is the daughter of the late William Zuehsow. She is the granddaughter of the late Wilber Zuehsow and Nancy and the late Robert Neal, all who had resided in the Chicago area. She is a 2003 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. She earned her B.A., B.S. Ed., and M.A. from East Tennessee State University. She is a certified K-8 educator who is employed by Metro Nashville Public Schools.

Sides takes command at American Legion Post 99

Gary Sides may have only resided in White County for just over a year, but he’s already finding ways to embrace his new home town, by getting involved in local organizations, including the American Legion, Post 99, which recently elected him their new post commander.

Sides hails from Missouri, and began his military career in 1960, joining the Army during the Cold War.

While in the Army he worked in ordinance, where he was responsible for the upkeep of military vehicles and disposing of excess materials. During his time in service, he attended basic training in Missouri and school in Maryland, then spent several months in Fort Campbell, … Read More


City sales tax increase will be on August 4 ballot

Voters who reside within the City of Sparta will be asked whether they want to approve increasing the sales tax rate charged on purchases made within the city limits, after the Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen reported, during their June 16, 2016, meeting that the decision would be placed in the hands of voters when they hit the polls on Aug. 4.

The increase, which will raise the sales and use tax on purchases collected by the city from 2.25 percent to 2.75 percent, had been unanimously approved to be placed on the ballot during two separate readings in previous meetings.

Eighth annual Operation Dry Water weekend set for June 24-26

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will be participating in Operation Dry Water, June 24-26. Operation Dry Water is a national weekend of Boating Under the Influence (BUI) awareness and enforcement campaign directed toward reducing alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities.

Operation Dry Water is held the weekend prior to the Independence Day (July 4) holiday to give BUI enforcement high visibility during the peak boating season. The TWRA is teaming with the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). Operation Dry Water was started by the NASBLA in 2009.

9/10 All Stars hosting Area All Star Tournament

The Sparta 9/10 year old baseball all stars will have the homefield advantage for the area tournament.

The county baseball fields located just off the Smithville Highway will be the site of this year’s area and district tournament. The top two teams will advance from the area to the district.

Sparta’s team will take to the field for their first game Saturday at 6 p.m.

The manager for the 9/10 year old team is Casey Scoggins, who will be assisted by Derek Baker and David Pinion. Scoggins hopes to use the all star experience of his players and a deep pitching staff to advance in the tournament.

Senior Center re-opens June 23 with limited activities

The Senior Center will be open Thursday, June 23, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.,  for card playing and congregate meal on the front side of the building. On Friday, June 24, the center will resume all activities.


Howard Reunion

The Howard Reunion, for the descendants of Robert F. and Nancy Crooke Howard,  is scheduled for 1 p.m., Sunday, July 10 at the Sparta-White County Rescue Squad Building. Bring your favorite dish(es) and enjoy the time with family. Bingo will be played and door prizes awarded.


Concrete complete at skate park

The new skate park on Bockman Way moves forward, with concrete work now complete. Much of the work was completed by Sparta Public Works employees.
