Warriors fall to Cherokees

McMinn County celebrated homecoming with a 55-22 victory over the White County High School Warriors in Athens.  The Cherokees led 48-6 early in the fourth quarter before the Warriors scored back to back touchdowns  to make the score 48-22.  McMinn scored the final touchdown in the Region 4-5A contest.

McMinn County adds a 30-yard touchdown pass to build a 22-6 lead with 7:40 remaining in the first half.

On the first play from scrimmage following the Warrior touchdown, McMinn breaks a 73 -yard touchdown run and adds a two-point conversion to take a 15-6 lead wirh 19 seconds remaining in the initial quarter.

WCHS took advantage of another McMinn County fumble and turned it into six points.  Jake Shockey scored from five yards away wit 42 seconds left in the first quarter.  Cantrell’s extra point was blocked.  Cherokes lead 7-6.

After fumbling on their first possession,  McMinn County broke a 53-yard touchdown run on their second series to take a 7-0 lead at the 6:49 mark of the first quarter.

Solon Lack Jr.

Solon Lack Jr., 86, passed away Sept. 15, 2016, at Saint Thgomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta, after a short illness.

Mr. Lack was born April 16, 1930, in DeKalb, to Solon H. Lack, and Ofallon Lathan Lack.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Annie Dobbs Lack; brothers, James T. Lack, Norvel Austin Lack; and sons, Gary Dwight Lack and Petenza Gerald Lack.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Goodson Lack, and her children and grandchildren; sons, Phillip Lack, of Michigan, and his children and grandchildren,

Gary Wayne Moore

Gary Wayne Moore, 55, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 29, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Moore was born Nov. 26, 1960, in Crossville, to Harry Moore and Nettie Hall Moore. He was the husband of Tammie Barnwell Moore.

No services are planned at this time.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Mary Louise Klein Evans

Mary Louise Klein Evans, 84, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 29, 2016, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Mrs. Evans was born April 17, 1932, in White County, to Merrill Jackson Klein and Louise Cantrell Klein.

After working at the Sparta Shirt Factory, she then operated her own beauty shop for several years. Later, another career change led her to LBJ&C where she was a teacher and supervisor for 30 years. While Mrs. Evans had a work career outside the home, she was always a dedicated homemaker, caring for her children and grandchildren. Oneida Jones Massa, 78, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 28, 2016, at Skyline Medical Center.

Mrs. Massa was preceded in death by her parents, Left Washington Jones and Nancy Elizabeth Ashburn Jones; two brothers, Joe Jones, Roy Jones; and two sisters, Clara Nell Stoglin and Rosell Robinson

Survivors include her of 52 years, Harold Massa, of Sparta; brother, Frank Jones and wife JoAnn, of Sparta; sister-in-law, Lou Jones, of Sparta; niece Lori Holloway and husband Josh, of Sparta; nephew, Steve Jones, of Sparta; great-nieces, Marley Jones, Lauren Holloway, of Sparta; and great-nephew, Luke Holloway, of Sparta.

Sparta resident travels to Washington D.C. to urge Congress to make cancer a top priority

As part of the annual American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Leadership Summit and Lobby Day, more than 600 advocates from every state traveled to Washington, D.C., to ask Congress to support critical policies proven to reduce suffering and death from cancer. Among the ACS CAN volunteers was Bea O’Roark, of Sparta, who urged her members of Congress to support legislation that would increase cancer research funding, improve patient quality of life and increase access to colorectal cancer screenings for seniors.
