NARFE meeting

NARFEThe National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, Chapter 1956, will have its regular monthly meeting, on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, at Shoney’s Restaurant, on South Jefferson Avenue, in Cookeville. The meal begins at 6 p.m., with the meeting at 6:45 p. m.

The speakers this month will be Charles and Jane Kosa, talking on the subject “Travel Overseas – Cheaply.” They have some interesting information to share and stories to tell. Please make every effort to attend. You are welcome to bring a friend.

All current and retired federal employees and their spouses are invited to attend.

Wayne Masciarella enters second-degree murder plea

“I am satisfied with the resolution of this case, even though it was investigated by the previous administration. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has received undue criticism about this investigation. Hindsight is 20/20, and I’m sure some things could have been done differently, but at the end of the day, we would still be where we are now. Wayne Masciarella said from the very beginning of this investigation that he stabbed Courtney Cash. He did not implicate anyone as being involved in the stabbing, and he took responsibility for the death of Courtney Cash. Harold Bruce Sherrell

Harold Bruce Sherrell, 66, passed away Sept. 5, 2016.

Mr. Sherrell was born Feb. 25, 1950, in Sparta, to Harold and Willmeta Sherrell.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his sisters, Yvonne Carrigan, Elaine Fisher (Wayne); brother, Tommy Sherrell; and nieces, nephew and cousins.

Graveside service will be at noon, Sept. 16, 2016, at Bethlehem Cemetery.

Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Ethel Marie Hickey Cobble

Ethel Marie Hickey Cobble, 70, of Spencer, who had been residing at NHC Healthcare of Sparta, went to be with the Lord, on Sept. 10, 2016.

She was born Nov. 4, 1945, in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, to Charlie Othel Hickey and Christine Marie Collins Richardson.

She loved to read the Bible and worship the Lord and had a passion for the piano and singing.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ralph Hickey; and sisters, Ruby Hickey, Betty Jo Smith, Flora Foster and Lillie Mae Talbott.

Survivors include her son, Israel Timothy Watson, of Virginia; granddaughter, Victoria Kay Watson, of Sevierville; grandson, Gabriel Quinn Watson, of … CONTINUED


Hobert Lee Dunlap

Hobert Lee Dunlap, 76, of Spencer, passed away Sept. 12, 2016, at his home.

Mr. Dunlap was born Oct. 2, 1939, in Spencer, the son of Fred Dunlap and Sopha Simmons Dunlap

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Sept. 14, 2016, at Spencer First Baptist Church, with burial in Spencer Town Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-9 p.m., Sept. 13, at the funeral home, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Sept. 14, at the church.

Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Vol State summer 2016 honor Roll

The following students from Sparta have been named to the Summer 2016 Honor Roll for Volunteer State Community College. The Honor Roll recognition is awarded to students who have completed a minimum of eighteen collegiate-level hours with at least a 3.75 grade point average during the awarding term.

Homeschool Dramatic Society performing in Cookeville

The Homeschool Dramatic Society, made up of more than 100 homeschooled students from across the Upper Cumberland, is preparing for their 18th annual production at the Cookeville Performing Arts Center. Several of the Society’s members are from Sparta.

Mary Evelyn McCurdy began the Homeschool Dramatic Society, in 1999, and has directed one play each year ever since.

“This year’s play is based on the true story of George Müller,” McCurdy said. “Müller founded an orphanage in England in the 1800’s. He decided that he would operate the orphanage purely on the basis of faith. He never asked anyone for money or other items the orphans needed, but the … CONTINUED


September recognized as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, in which the Upper Cumberland Development District and other organizations across the state are taking steps to raise the awareness of the crisis of suicide and the challenges of those families left behind.

UCDD Executive Director Mark Farley signed a proclamation to recognize September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, support the efforts of the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network  and urge all citizens to work to prevent suicide and to raise awareness and tolerance around all people affected by this tragedy.
