Unemployment rates remain steady for third month

Jobs3      Unemployment remains steady in White County, with a new report released by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development showing a slight dip in September when compared to the month before and improvement over the same time last year.

The report shows a slight decrease, from 5.4 percent in August to 5.3 percent in September, with the number of unemployed residents decreasing from 630 in both July and August, to 620 in September.

The rate for July was also 5.3 percent.

Weir arrested on burglary, assault charges related to Bon Air break-in

The White County Grand Jury has issued pickup indictments for two individuals, who investigators allege committed an aggravated burglary and assault at a White County residence, in November 2015.

One of the individuals who allegedly committed the offenses has recently been arrested on the charges.

According to Assistant District Attorney General Bruce MacLeod, the incident occurred on Nov. 7, 2015.

Investigators allege that at approximately 8:39 p.m. they were dispatched to a break-in in progress in the Bon Air Mountain area.

Judge denies county’s motion to dismiss lawsuit filed by sheriff

White County has lost the first round of a legal battle with Sheriff Oddie Shoupe after a hearing in Cookeville, on Oct. 28, ended with the Judge Jonathan Young denying the county’s motion for dismissal.

Shoupe filed a lawsuit in August 2016 against the county citing the need for more funds to effectively operate his department and to provide raises for his employees.

The county’s motion to dismiss was filed Sept. 9, 2016, by attorneys John M. Meadows and Randal A. Boston, who are presenting the county in this matter.

WCHS Basketball season tickets on sale November 1st

Basketball tickets for the White County High School 2016-17 season go on sale Tuesday, November 1st.

WCHS will have 12 home games this season beginning with the Hall of Fame game against Smith County on November 15th.  The Sonic Shootout is not included in the season tickets.

Reserved seats for the season are $100 per seat.  General admission season tickets can also be purchased for $60.  The cost of a general admission ticket at the gate this season is $6.

Tickets can be purchased each weekday in the WCHS front office during school hours.

B.K. Luna, 74, owner of Luna & Son Tire and a White County commissioner, passed away Oct. 28, 2016, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Funeral arrangements will be complete by Sunday evening.

Cleveland has dominated the first half .   two defensive touchdowns, two blocked punts and three offensive touchdowns have propelled the Raiders to a 37-0 lead over the Warriors in the final game of the season for both teams.

The Raiders recover another Warrior fumble in the end zone and increase their lead to 23-0 with eight minutes still to play in the first half.

The Raiders pick up a Warrior fumble and take it 58-yards to the end zone.  They add the two-point conversion to push out to a 15-0 lead with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter.

After recovering a Cleveland fumble on the opening kick, the Warrior offense was forced to punt. Cleveland answered with a four-play scoring drive to go up 7-0 with 7:08 left in the first quarter.


Vietnam veterans honored

Don Smith, president of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Knoxville, presented the White County Vietnam Veterans organization 50th anniversary commemorative lapel pins, as well as stickers that indicate the anniversary. In President Obama’s proclamation, he called upon federal, state and local officials to honor our Vietnam Veterans, our fallen, our wounded, those unaccounted for, our former prisoners of war, and their families.


Clifford Lane “Cliff” Writtenberry

Clifford Lane “Cliff” Writtenberry, 65, passed away Oct. 25, 2016.

He was born in Sparta, Tennessee, but lived in Florida until 1996 when he moved to Murfreesboro to be closer to his family.

Mr. Writtenberry has some survivors who reside in Sparta.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Oct. 28, 2016, at Murfreesboro Funeral Home, with visitation 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Oct. 28, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Murfreesboro Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fall Fun Fest today

Sparta First Free Will Baptist Church will have its Fall Fest, 4-8 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 28, at Pearson Park, next to Sparta Civic Center, in the pavilion. There is something for all ages, including a hayride. Food around 6 p.m. Everyone is invited.
