Will White County voters set new record for a presidential election?

The percentage of White County voters casting their ballots in the presidential election has been declining in the last two presidential elections, with a 55.88 percent voter turnout in November 2012 and a 63.35 percent voter turnout in November 2008.

The 2016 presidential election, however, could turn the tide in voting trends, as early voters continue to flock in large numbers to cast their ballots, putting this election on track to possibly have the greatest early voter turnout in the past decade, which is as far back as the state’s web statistics show.

Chamber membership soaring

Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce is continuing its positive momentum, with membership figures more than doubling in the past 18 months, a leveling budget and the forthcoming unveiling of a new website that could deliver great perks to Chamber members.

During their Oct. 25, 2016, meeting, the Chamber Board of Directors discussed the growth they have seen following the most recent fundraising event and membership drive.

The fundraising event, a Business After Hours party held at Jackson Kayak, sold approximately 85 tickets. Prepaid tickets were $10, and tickets purchased at the door were $15.

The total amount raised won’t be available until next month’s meeting.

Zile charged with drugs for resale, stealing parts from Valley Ford, and debit card theft

Herbert Preston Zile, 31, of South Camp Heights Drive, in Sparta, is facing a list of charges, as officers say he stole parts from vehicles at Valley Ford, used a stolen debit card and had illegal drugs that appeared to be for resale.

According to warrants filed by Investigator Doug Goff and Patrolman Nick Dunn, both of Sparta Police Department, the investigation began on the morning of Oct. 19, 2016, when Sgt. Brent Copeland was dispatched to Valley Ford, at 111 Auto Lane, about a theft.

Alpha Delta Chapter visits new White County Career Academy

Tim Mackie, assistant principal for Career/Technical Education at White County High School, answers a question from Terri Newton, member of Alpha Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma (Society for Key Women Educators). Alpha Delta toured the new state-of-the art career academy for mechatronics, health sciences, etc. as their program, on Oct. 24, 2016. A student who obtains a certificate in mechatronics can begin a career with a starting salary of approximately $40,000.

NHC Sparta to host trick or treating event

NHC Sparta will be holding a Trick-or-Treating event at their facility, located at 34 Gracey Street beginning after residents have finished their dinner, at 5 p.m. on Oct. 31. There will be more than 40 residents handing out candy to trick-or-treaters.

Billy “Meatball” Austin, 84, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 26, 2016, NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Mr. Austin was born June 13, 1932, in Putnam County, to Shelah Austin and Josie Mae Mitchell Austin.

He was retired from the Tennessee National Guard.

Mr. Austin was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dillard Austin (in World War II), Kenneth Austin and his wife Deanna; and sister-in-law, Nannie L. Austin.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Maxine Bumbalough Austin; son, Michael E. Austin and wife Joyce; daughters, Regina K. Jolly and husband Jeff, Cherri D. Taylor and husband Richard; grandchildren, Michele Austin, Zach Jolly and … Read More

Farmer of the Month

This month’s Farmer of the Month, presented by White County Farm Bureau agent Bradley Locke, is to Karley Warner. Karley Warner and her family owns and operates a small agritourism farm called Baker Mountain Farm, in Van Buren County. With just under 30 acres, they raise club lambs and have 500 apple trees. She loves when visitors come to their farm so she can give them tours and help educate them on all of the different animals they have in our petting farm.

Gerald Roderic Smith

Gerald Roderic Smith, 82, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 24, 2016, at Saint Thomas MidTown Hospital, in Nashville.

Mr. Smith was born April 25, 1934, in Russell County, Virginia, the son of Carson Smith and Beulah Watson Hurn.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m., Nov. 6, 2016, in St. Paul, Virginia.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Daniel Ray Baker

Daniel Ray Baker, 65, of Sparta, passed Oct. 25, 2016, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Mr. Baker was born Nov. 6, 1950, in Sparta, the son of Dan Baker and Ruby Fletcher Baker.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Willie Baker.

Survivors include two daughters, Tracy Conley and Rick, of Sparta, Michelle Fox and Travis, of Sparta; nine grandchildren, Justin, Cody, Brooke, Katelin, Breanna, Zack, Tyler, Alyssa, Kyra; and a niece, Jennifer Baker.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Nov. 5, 2016, at Doyle Methodist Church.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
