Ben Brandes gets new companion in service dog Leo

As Leo, a big, fluffy, English-cream-colored golden retriever sleeps on the cold tile floor with his two back legs sprawled out behind him, one of the many endearing quirks the Brandes family has come to love about him, he doesn’t appear to be working.

When Ashley Brandes’ cell phone begins to vibrate in her purse, however, Leo becomes instantly alert, nudging her purse to make sure Ashley knew she was receiving a phone call.

Leo is a service dog for Ashley’s son, 13-year-old son Ben, who is autistic. He’s only recently become a member of the Brandes family, but Leo is already making a major difference for Ben.… CONTINUED


Howell facing several charges following Highway 70 crash

A Sparta man has been arrested following a traffic crash in which the investigating officer, Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Gavin Sullivan alleges he was driving under the influence of prescription medication for which he did not have a prescription.

The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 5:04 p.m. on Dec. 11.

According to a warrant filed by Sullivan, he was dispatched to a crash on Highway 70 West near Wilmar’s Market involving two vehicles, one of which went over an embankment.

According to Sullivan’s crash report, a 2000 Dodge Caravan, driven by Gene Douglas Howell, 55 of Sparta, was traveling west on Highway 70 when he crossed the center … CONTINUED


Scholar-Athlete of the Week

Zoey Layne is the Scholar-Athlete of the Week for Dec. 5-9, 2016.

Zoey is a member of the swim team. Zoey’s teacher, Juonna Thompson, had this to say about Zoey. “Zoey tends to stay relatively quiet in class. She is attentive, polite, and consistently turns in quality work to maintain an A in class.”

Ken Craig, The Swim Team Coach had this to say about Zoey. “Zoey is a hardworking student athlete with a strong desire to succeed in her academic classes, as well as swimming. I have seen a huge difference in her determination to improve in all aspects of competitive swimming from her freshman year.”


Warriors and Warriorettes start their week off right

On Monday night, the Warriors and Warriorettes played host to the DeKalb County High School Tigers.

On Tuesday night the Warriors and Warriorettes traveled to Clinton, to take on Clinton High School.

In the first game of the evening, on Monday, the Warriorettes defeated the Lady Tigers by a final of 73-35. In the second game of the evening, on Monday night, the Warriors were able to beat the Tigers by a final score of 66-50.

On Tuesday evening, the Warriorettes defeated the Lady Dragons in convincing fashion by the final score of 65-23. The Warriors took care of business against the Dragons by a final of 62-45.… CONTINUED


VBHS splits with Dunlap

On Monday night, the Van Buren County High School teams traveled to Dunlap to face off against Sequatchie County High School.

The first game of the evening saw the Eaglettes take a loss against the Lady Indians by a final of 55 to 30.

In the second game of the evening, the Eagles defeated the Indians 61-47 after taking a big lead in the 3rd quarter and cruising to victory.

In the first quarter of the first game of the night, the Eaglettes struggled to get things going, falling behind 13-5.

WCMS 7th and 8th win 3 out of 4

The WCMS seventh and eighth grade teams traveled to Manchester for a conference game, on Monday night, against Coffee County Middle School Red Raiders.

The 7th grade teams split their two games, and the 8th grade teams swept their two games.

The 7th-grade girls’ team was defeated by one, with the final score of 22-21. The 7th grade boys’ team jumped out quick on the Red Raiders and held out a comeback attempt to win 46-35. During the 8th grade games, the Warriorettes had a two-point lead going into halftime and used a big third and fourth quarter to pull away from the Lady Red Raiders. In the … CONTINUED

Sparta residents participate in Washington D.C. event

Congressman Diane Black hosted guests from Sparta along with others from the 6th Congressional District, Nov. 29-30, 2016, for “The Jefferson Gathering”, a Congressional – Clergy Town Hall, in Washington D.C., at the U.S. Capitol building. The event was authorized by the Speaker of the House, Congressman Paul Ryan and hosted by Dan Cummins of The Jefferson Gathering.

The purpose of the event was for lawmakers to interact with pastors, laymen, and evangelical leaders from across the country to hear their concerns and together take part in weekly worship services recently reinstated by Congress at the Capitol building. Five generations of family

Lillie “Rae” Davis Kirby-Lollar was born March 4, 1924, in the Big Bottom area, of White County, Tennessee. She is the youngest of seven children born to Tillman and Martha Helen Davis. “Rae” is the only surviving child of the Davis Family.

She was married to Walter Kirby from 1939 to 1978 when he died from cancer. “Rae” worked at the Shirt Factory and has many a story of her co-workers and how they were all such good friends and always had each other’s back. She also was a personality fixture at Big Star Grocery Store for many years in Sparta. “Rae” was always there behind that … CONTINUED


Knights of Columbus organization holds annual campaign for people with intellectual disabilities

The Knights of Columbus Chapter 14902, from St Andrew Catholic Church sponsored their annual “Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities” Fund Drive. This program, often referred to as the “Tootsie Roll Drive,” has been in existence since 1970. Knights, their spouses and representatives from Pacesetters handed out free Tootsie Rolls at Floyd’s Cash Saver, Save-A-Lot, and Serenity Thrift Store. We would like to thank these businesses for their support, as well as those who contributed to this worthwhile cause. All donations received are used to fund the Knights’ programs geared to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.

TN defeats Golden Eagles, 74-68, despite furious second-half rally

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the second time in three days, a furious comeback bid fell just short for the Tennessee Tech men’s basketball team Tuesday evening as in-state rival Tennessee (5-4) downed the Golden Eagles (4-8) in Knoxville, 74-68.

The Golden Eagles fought back from a 22-point, second-half deficit to pull within four points with 20 seconds to play. Just two days earlier, Tech nearly erased an 18-point, second-half deficit at Michigan State, eventually falling to the Spartans, 71-63.
