WCMS 7th grade teams split with North Middle School

The WCMS 7th grade teams hosted the North Middle School Gators on Thursday night. The 7th grade girls battled back in the final minutes but just came up short losing 29-26. The 7th Grade Boys defeated North in convincing fashion jumping out early and coasting to a 47-12 win.

In the first game of the night, the Warriorettes jumped out to 6-2 lead at the end of one. In the second quarter, the Warriorettes were outscored 7-8 but were still ahead 13-10 heading into the locker room. In the third quarter the North girls turned it on. WCHS freshmen and Junior Varsity boys split with Rhea County

The White County High School Freshman and Junior Varsity boys hosted the Rhea County Eagles at Roy Sewell Gymnasium on Thursday night. The freshman boys walked away with a 70-44 convincing win. But the junior varsity boys lost their game 60-53.

In the freshman game, the Warriors pulled away from the Eagles in the first quarter and never looked back. In the first quarter of Thursday night’s contest, Micah Webster led his team to a big lead. The White County Middle School 8th Grade teams hosted the North Middle School Gators from Franklin County on Thursday night and walked away winning both games. The Warriorettes won in a convincing fashion winning by a final of 50-28. The Warriors won their game 41-29.

In the first quarter of the girls’ game both teams started out slow, but the Warriorettes held the lead at the end of one by a score of 8-3. Van Buren picks up two district wins on homecoming night

The Van Buren County High School teams played host to district foe Lookout Valley High School on Friday evening, and both teams walked away with victories. In the First game of the night, the Eaglettes defeated the Lady Yellow Jackets by a final of 53-29. In the second game of the night, the Eagles built a big lead in the second quarter and finished it in the second half winning 62-35.

Director of Governor Haslam’s security team first trooper to graduate from Tennessee Tech’s Masters of Professional Studies in Public Safety program

As the director of Tennessee’s Executive Protection Unit, Lt. Les Dolente of the Tennessee Highway Patrol rarely leaves Governor Bill Haslam’s side. On Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, however, Dolente needed a few hours off to graduate from Tennessee Tech University.

Dolente became the first trooper and the first student to graduate from Tech’s Master of Professional Studies in Public Safety program during commencement ceremonies at Tech’s Eblen Center.

Thelma Louise Milligan, 95, of Sparta, passed from this life, on Dec. 8, 2016, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Mrs. Milligan was born April 23, 1921, in Sparta, the daughter of Phillip Copeland and Pearl Bradley Copeland.

She was one of the most compassionate and spunky ladies you would ever meet. She always made the best fried chicken and pecan pies. If you were at her table, you never left hungry. She loved God, her family and her church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Perry Milligan.

Jimmie Willette Hutson Nash, 80, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 8, 2016, at her residence.

Mrs. Nash was born May 5, 1936, in White County, to Virgil and Lola Mae Baker.

She was retired from NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Olin Glynn Nash; a son, William Lynn Nash; and nine brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her children, Royce Nash, of Cookeville, James (Delena) Nash, of Sparta, Luke Nash, of Sparta, Glynda (Dennis) Wallace, of Sparta, Jennifer Nash, of Ballinger, Texas, Jerry (Penny) Nash, of Woodbury; 18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Gerald Dwain “Jerry” Koontz, 57, of Spencer, passed away Dec. 7, 2016.

Mr. Koontz was born June 28, 1952, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of Fredrick Koontz and Eva Frasier Koontz.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m., Dec. 11, 2016, at Spencer Church of God.

Mr. Bennett was born Jan. 10, 1965, in Sparta, to James Floyd Bennett and Helen Allison Bennett.

He loved fishing, football and basketball. He served his country in the National Guard Army for several years. He will be deeply missed by everyone who loved him.

Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his father, James Floyd Bennett, and a nephew James Keith Price.

Elma Lee Reeves Welch, 91, a resident of the Eastland community, passed away Dec. 8, 2016, at her residence.

Mrs. Welch was born Jan. 13, 1925, in the Eastland community of White County, to Robert Reeves and Fannye Spain Reeves.

She was a homemaker, worked some years at Thomas Industries and was a teacher in the mining camps. She was a member of the Church of Christ and attended Eastland Church of Christ.

Mrs. Welch was preceded in death by her husband Woodrow Wilson Welch; two children, Kay Welch Beavers, Gayle Welch; and granddaughter, Andrea Kirby White.
