Doyle offering reward for vandals

The Doyle Board of Mayor and Aldermen has expressed frustration month after month, as they place calls to Caney Fork Electric Cooperative to replace streetlights that have been shot out by vandals, just to have them almost immediately vandalized again.

Now, as they are facing having to possibly begin paying the utility company for the replacement of the lights, Doyle aldermen are taking steps to try to identify the culprits, offering a reward for information that leads to the conviction of the suspects.

Owls defeat Warriors by one in double overtime

The Warriors traveled to Ooltewah High School on Tuesday night to face off against the Ooltewah Owls. It took double overtime and a last second shot to find a winner for the game, but the Owls defeated the Warriors by a final of 55-54.

In the first quarter, the Warriors and the Owls traded baskets, but the Warriors used a 5-0 run at the end of the quarter to take a 14-10 lead at the end of one thanks to a strong start from Jared Carter (10).

Warriorettes complete season sweep of Ooltewah

On Tuesday night the Warriorettes traveled down to Ooltewah High School to take on the Lady Owls. In a game where the Warriorettes didn’t have one of their key players Deandra Luna due to an ankle injury she suffered the day before in practice, the Warriorettes were able to still win in convincing fashion by a final of 61 to 43.

WCMS 8th graders defeat visiting Harris on homecoming night

The 8th grade teams hosted Harris Middle School on Monday night for Homecoming, and both teams walked away with convincing victories. The Warriorettes won the first game of the evening by a score of 45-13. In the second game of the night, the Warriors defeated Harris by a final of 57-12.

Freddie Lewis Holman, 69, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 3, 2016, at his residence.

A memorial service will be Dec. 30, 2016 at Oak Lawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be 1-3 p.m., Dec. 30, at the funeral home.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Shirley Jean Meade

Shirley Jean Meade, 78, of Picayune, Mississippi, formerly of Sparta, Tennessee, passed away Dec. 4, 2016, at her residence, in Picayune.

Mrs. Meade was born June 13, 1938, in Sparta, the daughter of Tommy Humphrey and Florence Jones Humphrey. She enjoyed volunteering at the hospital and working with her church in the benevolence program. Mrs. Meade loved dogs and cats, and she loved helping people.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Dec. 8, 2016, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial Oak Lawn Cemetery. Bro. Elmore Judd will officiate. The family will receive friends 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Dec. 8, at the funeral home.

Christmas Forest exhibit opens Dec. 10 at Cookeville History Museum

Dogwood Park isn’t the only destination for Christmas tree lovers. An entire “forest” awaits at the Cookeville History Museum.

The museum’s holiday exhibit, “Christmas Forest,” opens Dec. 10 with a reception from 1-3 p.m.

“People are really excited about it,” Cookeville museums manager Beth Thompson said. “It’s brand new and could possibly become an annual display.”

Earlier this fall, the museum offered local non-profit groups and civic organizations the opportunity to bring a Christmas tree to the museum and decorate it themselves as a way to show their holiday spirit while spreading awareness of their missions.

James Vanderbilt Phillips

James Vanderbilt Phillips, 74, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 3, 2016, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Phillips was born May 2, 1942, in Sparta, the son of Asco Phillips and Della Brock Phillips.

A memorial service will be held in the coming days, with the date and time to be announced.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Roger Williams

Roger Williams, 80, of Sparta, passed Dec. 5, 2016, at Uplands Village, in Pleasant Hill, after an extended illness.

Mr. Williams was born Jan. 21, 1936, in Putnam County, to Shilia Mire Williams and Girthree Cash Williams.

He was the former owner of Broadway Supermarket, in Sparta. He loved his community, working at Broadway and hunting and fishing with friends. Sparta and family was his life. He was an avid gardener and was told when he moved to Bon Air Mountain “you can’t raise watermelons up here.” He set out to prove them wrong and was then known for his delicious mountain watermelons. He will be missed.

Kirk and Doris Young are searching for their dog, Bruce Leroy, who went missing from the Woodland Park area. He needs his medication. If you have seen him, please contact Kirk or Doris at 738-7380 or 205-4461. He is family and is greatly missed. There is a reward offered for his safe return.
