Warriors run away from Stone in the 4th

After only being ahead by 4 heading into the 4th quarter. The Warriors outscored the Panthers 22-7 in the final quarter of play, and won by a final score of 73-54. Jared Carter led the way for the Warriors with 29 points.

Warriorettes trail by only one at the half

The Warriorettes trailed 31-19 with 4:34 left to go in the half, and then the Warriorettes went on a 15-4 to close the gap and only trail 35-34 at the half. Megan Anderson leads the Warriorettes with 12 points.


Happy birthday Josephine

Beautiful Josephine Dziegelski will celebrate her 100th birthday, on Feb. 1, 2017. Josephine, who is a resident at Life Care Center of Sparta, was born in Pennsylvania. She is the widow of a World War II veteran, Henry Dziegelski, and the mother of four children. She rode to school in a horse-drawn wagon. Please wish Josephine a Happy Birthday!

Highlands Fitness Challenge 2017

The Highlands Fitness Challenge, a program that aims to help local businesses and organizations cultivate a healthy and fit workforce, is gearing up for yet another great year in 2017.  This year’s challenge will begin in March and continue through May of 2017.  This competition-based challenge is initiated by the Highlands Health and Wellness Committee.  It provides an easy plan that equips Jackson, Overton, Putnam and White County businesses, organizations and community groups to get active.

White County school bus drivers are having a BBQ plate benefit for Laycee Bryant on 1/31/2017. It will include BBQ sandwich baked beans, slaw, chips, snack cake and water for $7. Whitlock named to dean’s list at Trevecca University

Trevecca Nazarene University has named the following student to its dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student and attain a semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.00 grading scale.

Samantha Kenley Whitlock, of Sparta, is among the numerous students who achieved this prestigious status.

Reconnect to offer last-dollar scholarship for adults without degrees to attend community college

In his seventh State of the State address to the General Assembly, Gov. Bill Haslam introduced his proposal to make Tennessee the first state in the nation to offer all Tennessee adults without a degree access to community college tuition-free – and at no cost to taxpayers.

If the Tennessee Reconnect Act is approved, Tennessee would become the first state in the nation to offer all citizens – both high school students and adults – the chance to earn a post-secondary degree or certificate free of tuition and fees.

Delesse Edward Stuart Jr.

Delesse Edward Stuart Jr., 75, of Sparta, passed away Dec. 22, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Stuart was born June 28, 1941, in Catskill, New York, the son of the Delesse Stuart and Betty Wright Stuart.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years.

A memorial service will be 5 p.m., Feb. 11, 2017, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m., Feb. 11, at the funeral home.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Evelyn Jo Hayes Handy

Evelyn Jo Hayes Handy, 65, wife of Billy D. Handy, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 24, 2017, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born on July 25, 1951, in Campton, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Richard M. Hayes and Jessie Mae Burks Stubblefield.

Mrs. Handy attended school, in Vandalia, Ohio, and then served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. She later worked in private duty nursing for 15 years before moving to Tennessee where she worked in property management, retail management and real estate. Tina Fisher Young, 52, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 29, 2017, at her home.

Ms. Young was born Sept. 5, 1964, in Smithville, to Linda Ann Fisher and Robert Hunt.

She was preceded in death by her special grandparents, Robert and Robbie Fisher and Louise Phillips.

Survivors include mother, Linda Ann Fisher (Michael) Ramsey; two sons, William Corey Young, Trevor Kane Young; one stepson, Justin Young; one sister, Chelsea Ramsey; three brothers, William J. Harris, Charlie J. Harris, Michael D. Ramsey; grandfather, Walter Phillips; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins; and a special friend, Mimi Young.
