Mrs. Willie Elrod Ashburn

Mrs. Willie Elrod Ashburn, 77, of Baxter, passed away Jan. 6, 2017, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Mrs. Ashburn was born June 28, 1939, in Putnam County, to Albert “Alb” Riley and Gladys Effie Hayes Elrod.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Columbus D. Ashburn, on Oct. 27, 1988; and several brothers and sisters.

She attended Rock Castle Church and was an ordained minister. She loved to crochet, cook, sing and make chocolate pies. She loved being with family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Renee and Rick Qualls, of Cookeville, Peggy Ashburn, of Cookeville; son and daughter-in-law, Albert … CONTINUED


James E. McCormick

James E. McCormick, 82, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 6, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. McCormick was born Nov. 10, 1934, in Sparta, to Rama Arthur McCormick and Lillie Austin McCormick.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service and retired from his family business, which he started more than 40 years ago, McCormick Heating and Cooling. He loved talking politics and spending time in the garden on his tractor, but he mostly loved visits from his children and grandchildren.

Mr. McCormick was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Rama Jean McCormick; and twins, Austin Raye and Lena Faye McCormick.

Overton County Patriots meeting

The Overton County Patriots will meet at 6 p.m., Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, at the Millard Oakley Public Library, in Livingston. The speaker this month will be Pastor Tim McLauchlin from Teen Challenge. The OCP is a non-partisan group that keeps Overton and surrounding counties informed as to what is going on in the community. Come see what we’re all about. Everyone is invited.

Ozrel E. Holeman, 91, of Sparta, passed away this morning at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Bessie “Edwina” Bilbrey

Bessie “Edwina” Bilbrey, wife of the late William Caleb Bilbrey, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, passed away Jan. 2, 2017.

Mrs. Bilbrey was born Aug. 29, 1926, to James P. and Nancy Teeple, of White County, Tennessee.

She loved to stay busy by gardening, sewing and knitting. She enjoyed her family and loved to bake and was known for her banana bread. She had a strong faith, and prior to health issues regularly attended Cross Street Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Sherman, Lewis, Carl and Ray Donald Teeple, and three sisters, Ava Teeple, Maggie Cantrell and Ruby Vinson.

State of Tennessee releases action plan to end chronic homelessness

Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, in partnership with both the U.S. and Tennessee Interagency Councils on Homelessness, today released an action plan to end chronic homelessness in the Volunteer State. The collaborative plan brings together multiple federal, state, county, and local government agencies, and community partners providing a systematic approach to help eliminate homelessness over the next 10 years.

Last September Gov. Bill Haslam by Executive Order reconstituted the Tennessee Interagency Council on Homelessness to coordinate the State’s efforts and develop a statewide plan to identify, develop, and ensure sustained partnerships among agencies, service providers, and advocates.
