White County FFA brings ATt&T’s Digital You program to Sparta

Members of the White County FFA provided a tech training for the General Federation of Women’s, Renaissance Club, and White County Extension club members on Jan. 23, 2017, at the White County Career Academy located on the campus of White County High School. Also, in attendance were Senator Paul Bailey and his wife, Amy, and State Representative Paul Sherrell and his wife, Miranda. FFA advisor and agriculture instructor Charles Cooper opened the program, and the welcome was provided by local FFA chapter president David Gentry.

Three Sparta men are arrested in counterfeit incident

On Jan. 30, 2017, at approximately 7:03 a.m., Sgt. John Meadows, of White County Sheriff Department, was dispatched to Airport Marathon about a counterfeit money.

On arrival, Meadows spoke with two female subjects who said that at 4:30 a.m., Bill Wade Roberts reportedly came to the store door and knocked, wanting to talk with one of the females.

According to the warrant, Roberts reportedly advised that he needed to get gas, and he paid for the gas with a $20 bill and was given $15 back in change.

White County Schools closed due to illness

White County Public Schools will be closed Thursday, Feb. 9 and Friday, Feb. 10 due to excessive illness. Parent Teacher conferences at the White County Middle School will be move to Monday, Feb. 13.


Crosland found deceased after missing several hours

A White County businessman has been found deceased on property he owned at 644 Gum Springs Mountain Road after law enforcement officials were notified Feb. 7, 2017, that family members could not locate the 45-year-old and were concerned about his whereabouts.

According to Detective John Ford, of White County Sheriff Department, the body of Bill Crosland was found at approximately 1:30 a.m., Feb. 8. Ford said Crosland had been missing since approximately 9:30 a.m., Feb. 7.

Ford said family members and friends assisted with the search.

No further details will be released at this time.

Registration underway for 2017 NASP State Tournament

The 11th Annual Tennessee National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Championships will be held March 30-31 at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro.Registration is underway and will run until March 1 at 10 p.m. (CST).   Click here to register. The NASP State Championships will return to the Miller Coliseum for the seventh consecutive year. More than 1,900 students representing more than 90 schools participated in the 2016 event.


Linda Kay Gentry

Linda Kay Gentry, 59, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 5, 2017, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Mrs. Gentry was born June 24, 1957, in Crossville, the daughter of William Cunningham and Ruby Floyd Cunningham.

She worked for NHC Healthcare of Sparta as a dietary secialist.

Mrs. Gentry will be missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Billy Ray Cunningham, Ronnie Joe Cunningham; and a sister, Brenda Randolph

Mary Virginia O’Neal

Mary Virginia O’Neal, 74, of Spencer, passed away Feb. 5, 2017, at the Webb House, in McMinnville.

Mrs. O’Neal was born Oct. 10, 1942, in Doyle.

She was a retired educator with the Van Buren County school system.

Mrs. O’Neal was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Maggie Brimer; a sister, Alene Brimer; and a brother Ray Brimer Jr.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Neal O’Neal; brothers, Jay (Patricia Ann) Brimer, Charles Brimer and Gail Schroeder; sisters-in-law, Wanda (Bob) Martin, Kathy (Bill) Jordan, Sue Sharbono; brothers-in-law, Bill O’Neal, Hugh (Teresia) O’Neal; and several nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

Donald Eugene Maynard

Donald Eugene Maynard, 81, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 31, 2017, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Maynard was born Oct. 29, 1935, in Sparta, the son of Clint Maynard and Maude Emerton Maynard.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a paratrooper. He received an honorable discharge and many medals. He was a truck driver most of his life. He never met a stranger and loved to talk.

“Poppy” was a wonderful man and will be missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joe, Willie Gaines, Bud; and sisters, Jane Spakes, Tini Sparkman and Pauline Vinson.

Harold Thomas Cope, 75, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 4, 2017, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 18, 1941, in Sparta, he was the son of Joe and Frances Green Cope.

Funeral service was 2 p.m., Feb. 7, 2017, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Gwen Ella Carter

Gwen Ella Carter, 69, left her temporary home, in Sparta, on Feb. 4, 2017, to go to her permanent home with her Lord and Savior and her parents, Anna Mae Carter and Donald Carter, and daughter, Jamie Jo Troutt.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Coley III; her son, Robert E. Thompson Jr., and fiancée, LeAnn Selby; daughter, Bobbi Ann Severt and husband Jammie Severt; grandchildren, Joshua McAnalley, K.J. Enlow, Roby Enlow, Zachary Thompson; and her cousin and best friend, Larry Kleinschmidt.

There are no services planned at this time.

Gary Harlen Brooks, 73, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 2, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Brooks was born Feb. 26, 1943, in Devils Lake, North Dakota, to Galen Hufford Brooks and Adele Christen Brooks.

He retired from Ward Paper Box Company, a part of Russell Stover Candy. He was an antique car enthusiast.

Don Edward Baker, 34, of McMinnville, passed away Feb. 5, 2017, in Spencer.

Mr. Baker was born Sept. 25, 1982, in Giles County, to Don Robert Baker and Ruby Ann Tindell.

Mr. Baker was a loving and caring son, brother, boyfriend and nephew. He believed that family was the most important thing beside God. God came first in his life.
