Plaintiffs in Gentry lawsuit request $5.2 million judgment

A second lawsuit has been filed against the owners of Gentry Bros. Tractor Supply in which two men have requested a total judgment of $5.2 million.

Scott A. Turney, of White County, and Mark Lindsey, a resident of Henderson, Nevada, filed the suit on Jan. 10, 2017, at the White County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, with Jeffery Lynn Gentry and Wendy Gentry named as the defendants,

Quick says public works projects are moving ahead

City of Sparta’s public works director provided a detailed report Thursday night at the Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting about several completed projects and those that are still in progress.

Dillard Quick, public works director, said crews have worked on repairs for breaks in five main water lines and had changed out five water meters. According to Quick, one of the two large meters that was ordered was installed on Feb. 1 but is not yet “tied in.” DeWhite Utility will “tie in” and then Sparta will follow.

Gary Harlen Brooks, 73, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 2, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Brooks was born Feb. 26, 1943, in Devils Lake, North Dakota, to Garlen Harlen Brooks and Adele Christen Brooks.

He retired from Ward Paper Box Company, which is a part of Russell Stover’s Candy. He was an antique car enthusiast.

Laycee Elizabeth Bryant

Laycee Elizabeth Bryant, 12, of Sparta, passed from this life, on Feb. 2, 2017, at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, in Nashville.

Laycee Elizabeth was born April 7, 2004, in Nashville. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Sparta. Laycee always had a smile. She loved all of her friends and everyone around her. She especially loved her little dog, Maggie.

Laycee was preceded in death by her grandmother, Darlene Bryant.

Chili dinner

White County Humane Society/Friends of White County Animals will host their annual chili dinner, 5-7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 629 Valley View Dr., in Sparta. The cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children. Tickets are available at The Fragrant Mushroom, The Mad Raven, The Berry Basket, and The Rusty Rooster. All proceeds go towards spay/neuter in White County.


Library Spring Book Sale

White County Public Library will conduct its Spring Book Sale as follows:

9 a.m.-6 p.m., Thursday, March 30

8 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday, March 31

8 a.m.-noon, Saturday, April 1

Book sales finance the library’s Summer Reading Program and other programs that promote literacy in White County. If you have any old books you would like to donate, please drop them off at the library, 11 N. Church St.


White, Van Buren and Putnam counties receive used oil grants

Tennessee Department of Environment and Conversation announced this week that several cities and counties are the beneficiaries of grants totaling $2,071,417.

These grant monies are designated for recycling equipment, recycling rebates and used oil grants for FY 2017 projects to help reduce landfill waste in Tennessee and move materials to the best highest use.

White County received a used oil grant in the amount of $161,700, which will be used to for the following: one contractor, 11 collection tanks, one storage tank, 11 canopies, 11 pads, 11 pumps, 11 absorbents, one SPCC, 11 crushers and 11 antifreeze tanks)

Van Buren County receives $50,000 grant for recycling equipment

Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation announced this week $2,071,417 statewide in recycling equipment, recycling rebates and used oil grants for FY 2017 projects to help reduce landfill waste in Tennessee and move materials to the best highest use.

Van Buren County received a grant for $50,000 for recycling equipment, with a match amount of $7,775. These funds will be used to purchase two vertical balers, two pallet scales and two 35-yard roll-off containers.

Recycling Equipment Grants and the Recycling Rebates are authorized by the Solid Waste Management Act of 1991 and are supported by the Tennessee Solid Waste Management Fund, which is administered by TDEC. The fund … Read More
