Taylor sets new single-season scoring record as Sewanee’s season ends with loss to OU

Despite a record-setting day by sophomore student-athlete Bella Taylor, the Sewanee women’s basketball team’s season came to an end Friday, as the Tigers lost to Oglethorpe 88-62 in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament.

The Tigers’ season comes to a close with a 9-16 overall record. Despite having a young roster that featured only two seniors, Savannah Rose and Haley Lyerly, the Tigers finished fifth in the SAA regular season.

Individually, Taylor finished with 14 points against Oglethorpe. That gave the sophomore from Sparta, Tenn., 505 points this season. With that, Taylor broke the program’s single-season scoring record, which was held by Kim Valek. Valek’s … CONTINUED


Bouldin’s big night helps Mocs Down Furman

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Jasmine Joyner (Southaven, Miss.) recorded her fourth straight double-double and 12th of the year to lead the Mocs to a 66-43 win over Furman at the McKenzie Arena and moved into a tie with Mercer for first in the Southern Conference women’s basketball standings.

The Mocs improve to 17-10 overall and 11-2 in league play and the Paladins drop to 14-15 overall and 7-6 against the SoCon.

Joyner was 6-of-13 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line for 15 points and 15 rebounds. It was her seventh double-double in the last eight games and a SoCon-best 12th of the … CONTINUED


Warriors advanced to the District Championship

On Feb. 18, the White County High School Warriors took on the Stone Memorial Panther in the District Tournament Semifinals with a chance to host a Region Tournament game on the line. The Warriors were leading by five heading into halftime and came out in the third quarter, and their offense exploded outscoring the Panthers 20-9 in the third quarter and used that point to help them hold on for the 65-53 victory.

Leftwich’s big night not enough to carry Warriorettes into District Championship

On Feb. 18, the Warriorettes took on the Cumberland County Lady Jets at Warren County High School for a chance to go to the District Tournament on the line. On Saturday night, Hannah Leftwich came out like a woman on a mission. Leftwich scored over half of the Warriorettes points and was able to pull down 14 rebounds on Saturday night. But the Warriorettes came up just short falling to the Lady Jets 57-47.

Warriorettes survive and advance

At this time of the year, it’s all about surviving and advancing, and the Warriorette basketball team did just that. The Warriorettes found themselves 21-27 at halftime, on Friday night, against a very athletic East Hamilton team on their home court in what could have been the season and the careers of the four seniors.

Over the remainder of the game, the Warriorettes outscored the Lady Hurricanes 33-24 for the 54-51 victory and secured a spot in the Region 3AAA semifinals.

Jerry Lynn Yates, 63, of Fayetteville, formerly of Doyle, passed away Feb. 25, 2017, at his residence.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., March 2, 2017, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m., Feb. 28, at Parks City Baptist Church, in Fayetteville, and 4-8 p.m., March 1, at Hunter Funeral Home. Bro. Don Russell will officiate.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eagles and Eaglettes both Advance to the Region Semifinals

The Van Buren County Eagles and Eaglettes have both advanced to the Region Semifinals. On Monday night the Eaglettes will play and on Tuesday night the Eagles will play. The Eaglettes were victorious over Boyd Buchanan 44-35. Mallory Christian led all scorers on the night with 20 points. The Eagles were able to pull out the 82-42 victory over Boyd Buchanan also. Sawyer Shockley led the Eagles with 18 points. The Eaglettes will play Monday at 6 pm CT at Marion County against Silverdale Academy. The Eagles will play on Tuesday night at Marion County against Silverdale Academy also.
