Today, on this Memorial Day, my mind and heart are taken back to a sad and heart-wrenching day when I truly learned about a soldier’s sacrifice for his country. Sgt. Shannon Taylor, 1974-2005, became a casualty of war. This young man touched so many lives at the Sparta National Guard Unit as they served together and fought together. Sgt. Taylor died Aug. 14, 2005, in Tuz, Iraq, of injuries suffered on Aug. 13, 2005, when his Humvee came under attack by enemy forces using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire in Tuz, Iraq. Billy Joe Webb, 36, of Rickman, passed away May 14, 2017.

Mr. Webb was Sept. 6, 1980, in McMinnville, the son of Bethel Webb and Floretta Myers Webb. He was the husband of Tina Norris Webb.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Loutisha Floretta Myers Grove, and grandparents, Bill and Loriene Myers and Joe and Ruth Webb.

Residents cleaning up debris and businesses dealing with damages from last nights storms

Severe weather brought in several rounds of storms throughout Saturday afternoon and evening causing wide spread damage throughout White County and the Upper Cumberland.

Residents in Sparta and Cookeville were alerted by tornado sirens multiple times yesterday. While weather radios, news stations, and mobile alert systems notified residents throughout the region of the severe weather and tornado warnings that had an significant impact on the local communities. 

Volunteer firefighters, rescue squad members, EMA officials, law enforcement, EMTs/Paramedics, and utility workers were busy throughout the evening and night clearing debris and restoring power to impacted communities.

Tech Athletics to host viewing party for NCAA baseball selection show Monday morning

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech baseball team is off to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009, and Tech Athletics wants all fans to be a part of the festivities.

The Golden Eagles will now wait to see where and when they will play in the NCAA Tournament, finding out its fate in Monday morning’s selection show. Tennessee Tech Athletics invites all fans to join the team in the Eagles’ Nest on the fourth floor of the Hooper Eblen Center for a special viewing party. Doors will open at 10:45 a.m. CT, with the show beginning at 11 a.m.

OXFORD, Ala. – Every batter came to hit, every pitcher came to throw and every player came to play defense, and that made all the difference as the Tennessee Tech baseball team (40-19) captured the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship Saturday evening, defeating No. 3 seeded Belmont (31-29) by a decisive and final score of 16-4.

The victory propels the Golden Eagles to their fifth NCAA Regional in program history and first since the 2009 championship team. It also marks just the second time in school history that Tech takes home both the OVC regular season and tournament titles in the … Read More

UPDATE: Severe weather causes damage to Luna & Son Tires and throughout White County

Throughout the afternoon and evening, severe weather systems have been making there way across Tennessee and through White County. 

At approximately 9:00 pm the Sparta Fire Department was dispatched to Luna & Son Tires located on North Springs Street due to reported roof damage. 

Upon arrival it was discovered that the roof on the large extended carport by Luna & Son Tires had been ripped off during the storms. 

The roofing material tangled itself around a nearby power line, ripping it down and coming to a rest against the All Ocassions Flowers and Gifts building,

Luna & Son Tires damaged, caused by severe weather

At approximately 9:00 pm, Sparta Fire Department was dispatched to Luna & Son Tires on North Spring Street due to storm damages. 

Firefighters are on the scene of North Spring Street and Turntable Road dealing with the debris from the damaged roof and downed power lines. 

Photos of the damage will be posted soon. 

Jean Ward Goddard Bastian

Jean Ward Goddard Bastian, 84, of Doyle, passed away May 26, 2017, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Bastian was born Dec. 1, 1932, in Doyle, to Henry Orville Goddard and Anna Bessie Ward Goddard.

She was an accomplished artist, having used a wide variety of avenues, especially in watercolors. Her work won appraise statewide. Mrs. Bastian has artwork displayed in McDonald’s headquarters Chicago, UBS Cookeville, as well as many awards. The conservation picture won statewide as the Trappers National Award plus a third place in a state contest.

Charles Edward Richardson, 65, of Sparta, passed away May 24, 2017, at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital, in Nashville.

Mr. Richardson was born March 9, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan.

He was a self-employed truck driver.

Mr. Richardson was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Mullins Richardson.

Survivors include his father, C. D. Richardson, of Sparta; sister, Faye (Mike) Holman, of Sparta; brother, Billy Joe Richardson, of Sparta; nieces, Sherry Young, Ashlee Herren, Lindsey Richardson; nephews, Charlie Holman, Jimmy Holman; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and two great-great-nieces

A memorial service was 7 p.m., May 30, 2017, at Hunter Funeral Home. Bro. Tommy Lee Davis officiated.

Ivres Earlene Rigsby Knowles

Ivres Earlene Rigsby Knowles, 78, of Walling, passed away May 25, 2017, at her residence.

Mrs. Knowles was born June 23, 1938, in Warren County, to Elmer Rigsby and Mandy Davis Rigsby.

She was retired from Red Kap.

Mrs. Knowles was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Curlee Knowles; and a sister, Dorothy Faye Rigsby.

Survivors include her three sons, David Knowles, Jerry Knowles, Marion Knowles; stepchildren, Donna, Lewis, Catherine Sue; grandchildren, Rachele, Amber, Shelby, Lora, Jack; great-grandchild, Rami; sister, Sue Jones; and several cousins.

Carl Ed Hunter, 85, of Sparta, passed away May 26, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Hunter was born March 15, 1932, in Sparta, to Walter Hunter and Frances Stockton Hunter.

Mr. Hunter was a member of New Life Ministries Church at Camp Heights. He served his country and retired from the U.S. Air Force. After his military career, he was a truck driver and large equipment operator. For several years, he owned the AMVETS in Sparta.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Steve Hunter; stepson, Billy Knowles; sisters, Reba Joyce Hunter Looney, Betty Louise Hunter; and brother, Ray Hunter.
