TCAT-Crossville hosting open house

Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT)-Crossville will host a high school to college open house from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 17, for area high school students to learn more about available training programs, dual enrollment opportunities, and admissions.

During open house, students in grades 9-12 and parents may come to TCAT Crossville at 910 Miller Ave., between the hours of 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to tour the campus, learn more about available training programs, and meet instructors.

Dycus installed as president of the Tennessee Dental Association

Dr. Richard Dycus, a Cookeville dentist, was installed as the 2017-2018 Tennessee Dental Association president during the association’s 150th annual session in Gatlinburg.

Dycus has served the TDA as Trustee, Fourth District President, Chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee, as a member of the Budget and Finance Committee, Steering Committee, Dental Care Council, and Legislative Council. On the national level, Dycus has served the American Dental Association as a delegate and on the Council on Dental Benefits.


Tennessee Tech’s impact on cybersecurity continues to expand with first Ph.D. graduate

Vitaly Ford is the first Ph.D. candidate to earn a doctorate in computer science at TTU.

With recent news of one of the largest cyberattacks in history, it is clear that developing the field of cybersecurity should be a priority. One of Tennessee Tech University’s latest contributions to that field is Vitaly Ford, the first Ph.D. candidate to earn a doctorate in computer science at Tech.

The subject of Ford’s doctoral thesis was on cybersecurity and privacy issues in the Smart Grid, which identified risks and solutions in the technology that controls electrical energy usage. Ford enrolled in Tech’s graduate program in computer science in 2012. He earned … CONTINUED


Stone Seminary Road burglary

According to Putnam County Sheriff Department, on May 26, 2017, Michael Christopher Poston, 48, of Cookeville,  was arrested following an investigation of a residential burglary on Stone Seminary Road. The residence was broken into twice within two months. Guns, coins and other valuables were taken. Poston was in possession of some of the items at the time of his arrest. His bond was set at $30,000. He is scheduled to appear in Putnam County General Sessions Court, on Wednesday, June 7, 2017.

John DeWayne Youngman

John DeWayne Youngman, 75, of Sparta, formerly of East Peoria, Illinois, passed away June 4, 2017, at Raintree Manor, in McMinnville.

Mr. Youngman was born Sept. 15, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, to Dewey Edgar Youngman and Geneva E. McCandeless Youngman.

He was a former employee of the Water Department of East Peoria, Illinois. He also had a career with the Bradley University Police and later with security for Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Youngman served his country in the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents; children, Shirley Glover, Keith Herbstreith, Danny Glover, Vickie Glover, Teresa Glover; and grandchild, Shannon Stewart.

Laura Rene Seibers Hensley

Laura Rene Seibers Hensley, 52, of Rock Island, formerly of Sparta, passed away June 5, 2017, at Saint Thomas River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.

Mrs. Hensley was born June 29, 1964, in White County.

She was a former employee of NHC Healthcare of Sparta’s housekeeping department and at one time owned all of the laundry mats in Sparta. She was a member of Campaign Church of Christ.

Mrs. Hensley was preceded in death by her father, Jonas Seibers; mother, Pauline Smith Seibers Barnes; daughter, Pauline Denise “Polly” Hensley; and brothers, Michael, Roy and Gene Seibers.
