WCHS Marching Band fundraising Yard Sale this weekend

The White County High School Marching Band is having a Yard Sale fundraiser today and Saturday.

The WCHS Band Boosters are raising money to purchase new show shirts for the upcoming Marching Band season. These shirts are worn during performances when the weather is too hot for their uniforms and for other events.

To support the WCHS Band program, the Yard Sale is set up in front of Cheek Insurance, on Mose Drive, Sparta.

The Yard Sale will be for today “Friday” and Saturday only.

WCTE’s Great TV Auction 2017

 WCTE’s Great TV Auction has been an Upper Cumberland tradition for more than 35 years. Broadcast live from the Cookeville Performing Arts Center, the eight-night event allows viewers to tune in to WCTE and bid on great items donated by local businesses. All you need to do is call the phone bank and place your bid.

WCTE’s Great TV Auction will take place during the first two weekends in June beginning June 1 through 4 then continuing June 8 through 11. Each night the auction will begin at 7 p.m. and end at 10 p.m.

Knights of Columbus hosts Fishing Rodeo for Pacesetters

Knights of Columbus Council 14902 hosted a Fishing Rodeo for Pacesetters of White County, on Saturday, May 20, 2017, with 26 participants from the clients and staff and 10 Knights, who provided the baiting of the hooks, casting out, and reeling in the fish at Lake Paula. The meal included hamburgers and hot dogs with potato salad, baked beans and watermelon. Each member of Pacesetters received fishing gear and assistance in fishing in the local lake. They also received a “Knights of Columbus Certificate of Completion” for attendance at the event.

TWRA issues 2017 Memorial holiday weekend boating report

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is reporting that there were no boating-related fatalities over the 2017 Memorial Day holiday weekend.

It marks the third consecutive year without a boating fatality over the weekend. There have been seven boating-related fatalities so far in 2017.

During the period from May 26-29, there was one injury accident and five property damage incidents. TWRA Boating and Law Enforcement officers made 17 boating under the influence (BUI) arrests. The number of BUI arrests was a decrease from 21 arrests made in 2016.

Deep discussions sparked about proposed City budget during board meeting

During the City of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting tonight, a deep and some what pointed discussion between Alderman Jerry Lowery , Alderman Dr. Chad Griffin, and Mayor Jeff Young over the upcoming fiscal budget occurred. 

Alderman Lowery called into question and critiqued some of the proposed budget increases, including adding an automatic metering system for the electric department. 

Alderman Dr. Griffin and Mayor Young objected to the stance that Alderman Lowery took on the proposed budget. This resulted in a lengthy discussion between the Aldermen and a declaration of several board members fiscal conservative stances.

Richard John Sutton, 87, of Sparta, passed away June 1, 2017, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Mr. Sutton was born Oct. 6, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of William Sutton and Katherine Alward Sutton. He was the husband of Kari Nylander Sutton.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m., June 10, 2017, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, in Sparta.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sparta First Free Will homecoming

Sparta First Free Will Baptist will have its homecoming on Sunday, June 4, 2017. Sunday School will be at 10 a .m., with the morning service beginning at 10:45 a.m. The Hambys will be the guest singers. Bro. Jack Taylor will be the speaker. Lunch and fellowship will follow the morning service in the fellowship hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. There will be no evening service.

Alice Anne Betterton

Alice Anne Betterton, 65, of Sparta, passed away May 31, 2017, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Ms. Betterton was born Oct. 19, 1951, in Pensacola, Florida, to Joseph C. Betterton and Ruby Ann Price Betterton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., June 3, 2017, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 9-11 a.m., June 3, at the funeral home.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Summer Reading Program started today with a great crowd

The White County Public Library Summer Reading Program got started today and attracted a large crowd of children. This years theme for the Summer Reading Program is, “Build a Better World”.

The Summer Reading Program meets on Thursdays at 10:00 am at the Sparta First United Methodist Church. Each event is followed by a free lunch for children (18 years and younger), which is provided by the White County School Nutrition Summer Feeding Program.

Today, children were entertained by Barry Mitchell and his interactive storytelling, illusion filled, educational programming, called Smilemaker Show.

Next week on June 8, children will have the opportunity to enjoy, “Science with Mr. Bond”.… Read More
