Ford Lincoln of Cookeville is this year’s 2017 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Survivor Tent sponsor. Susan G. Komen is proud to partner with Geoff Root and his staff, on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, in downtown Cookeville, to support this great event. The public is invited to experience Race Village, on Fleming Avenue, and the five-mile run beginning at 7 a.m., on Dixie Avenue.

White County awarded federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program

White County has been chosen to receive $10,933 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from the American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Salvation Army; United Jewish Communities and United Way of America.

The Local Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

Delpha Octavia Winstead Mason

Delpha Octavia Winstead Mason, 70, peacefully passed away at her home and birth place, in Walling, Tennessee, on the morning of Aug. 10, 2017, after her long and valiant battle with cancer. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the prayers and support of her family and friends carried her through more than a year of grueling chemotherapy and radiation. While in the end, cancer won the battle for her body, she won the gift of everlasting life, for “precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints” (Psalms 116: 15).

Jeffery Gentry plead guilty

Jeffery Lynn Gentry of Sparta has plead guilty to one count – wire fraud and one count – money laundering before the US District Judge Aleta Trauger in Nashville. 

If given the maximum penalty, Gentry could face up to twenty years per count in federal prison. Judge Trauger has ordered Gentry to pay restitution to the victims and fines associated with the charges. 

US Attorneys Office has agreed to not bring forward charges against Wendy Gentry, Jeffery Gentry’s wife, in connection of this case.

Sparta Woman’s Club hosting fire chief at Aug. 14 meeting

Fall is fast approaching, and Sparta Woman’s Club is planning its agenda to reflect its purpose – to make Sparta/White County a better place through the club’s public service and support.

White County Firefighters’ Association will present the first program at noon, Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, at Sparta First United Methodist Church. Fire Chief Kirk Young will provide information about the annual school fire prevention program, which teaches children and parents about fire safety. Sparta Woman’s Club will sponsor the program for 100 children. Members will be served a light luncheon following the meeting.

TTU hosting CyberCorps SFS Scholars BootCamp

Preparing for the future.

That’s what 43 college students are having a chance to do during the Second Annual CyberCorps Scholarship for Service BootCamp at Tennessee Tech.

Beginning at 8 a.m. this morning until 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, rising CyberCorps scholars will be trained in a variety of research and related soft skills to help them be successful in their cybersecurity education journey. Skills training will include communication and technical writing skills, ethics, etiquette, time management, personal finance, service learning, federal resume writing, and even dining etiquette.

Jerry Eugene Frasier

Jerry Eugene Frasier, 68, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 9, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Frasier was born Jan. 20, 1949, in Sparta, to Thomas Leslie Frasier and Rachel Lorene Payne Frasier.

He was a former Sparta Cablevision employee and owner of Sparta Construction. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was well known as an avid fan of the University of Tennessee.

Mr. Frasier was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gordon Frasier, Carl T. Frasier; and sisters, Lois Hensley and Janice Frasier.

Senior Day at White County Fair set for Friday, Sept. 1

Senior Day at White County Fair is set for Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, at White County Agriculture Complex. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies are at 9:45 a.m.. The Ms. Senior White County Pageant begins at 10 a.m., followed by a talent contest and lots of fun, entertainment, and food.

Applications for the Ms. Senior White County Pageant and for the talent competition are available at Life Care Center of Sparta and Sparta-White County Senior Center.
