Pecor receives sentence for role in drug trafficking ring

According to a press release from Putnam County Sheriff Department, on Sept. 26, 2017, David Allen Pecor received a 158-month prison sentence for his role in a drug trafficking organization that was reportedly moving enormous quantities of methamphetamine from Georgia to White and Putnam counties.

In 2016, Pecor was indicted in the United States District Court of the Middle District of Tennessee for Possession with Intent to Distribute 50 Grams or More of Methamphetamine, a Schedule II Controlled Substance (Title 21 USC 841 (A)(1)), Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime (Title 18 USC 924 (c)(1)) and Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute … Read More


Jim Dakouvanos

Funeral service for Jim Dakouvanos, 73, of Cookeville, will be held at noon, Oct. 2, 2017, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4905 Franklin Pike, in Nashville. Interment will be 3 p.m., Oct. 2, at Cookeville City Cemetery. Fr. Gregory Hohnholt will officiate.

The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m., Oct. 1, at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home, and 11 a.m.-noon, Oct. 2, at the church.

Mr. Dakouvanos died suddenly, on Sept. 29, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident, in White County.

Herman Hill

Herman Hill, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 25, 2017.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Oct. 7, 2017, at Hunter Funeral Home. Burial with full military honors presented by the U.S. Army Honor Guard will follow in Lee Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., Oct. 6, at the funeral home.

The U.S. Army Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers.

A complete obituary will soon be provided.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Paul Carlton Woodcock Jr.

Paul Carlton Woodcock Jr., 41, passed away Sept. 25, 2017.

Mr. Woodcock was born Nov. 17, 1975, in Panama City, Florida.

Survivors include two sons, Christopher Woodcock, Austin Woodcock, both of Sparta; parents, Paul Woodcock Sr. and Janice Woodcock, of Sparta; sisters, Kim (Rob) Cummings, of Lockport, New York, Trisha (Allen) Sanders, of Sparta; and beloved nieces and nephews.

A private family ceremony will be held.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Ron Fanning

Ron Fanning, who was born Feb. 14, 1942, and departed his life on Sept. 26, 2017, was a doer, never content to just sit still. He was meticulous and organized, and these served him well.

He joined the USAF at 19. After training, he was assigned to Barksdale AFB, in Louisiana, only to be sent to Homestead AFB, south of Miami, to wait on the missiles to come from Cuba. Fortunately for our country, we avoided nuclear war.

Adam Grissom

Adam Grissom, 37, passed away Sept. 27, 2017, at the Erlanger Bledsoe emergency room from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Mr. Grissom was born Sept. 23, 1980, in McMinnville.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Sparta Ward. He was a proud member of the NRA and a self-employed logger.

Mr. Grissom was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Lowell Grissom and Glenn Grissom.

What: All day yard sale (This year there will be spaces for travelers to park RVs.)

When: Starts at daylight and ends at dark

Where: The entire expanse of Bockman Way; will also include Pearson Park, next to Sparta Civic Center, and the vacant lot on South Church Street below the cemetery, which is the former location of the old jail. (All residents on side streets are also encouraged to participate.)

One killed after vehicle ran off Highway 111

First responders were dispatched to the scene of a vehicle that ran off the roadway and landed in a creek, which resulted in a fatality.

At approximately 6:39 a.m., on Sept. 29, dispatchers with White County E-911 received a call about a vehicle that reportedly ran off Highway 111.

The Sparta-White County Rescue Squad, NorthEnd Volunteer Fire Department, White County Sheriff Department, White County Emergency Medical Service, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered that a silver 1999 Mercedes SUV had left the roadway and landed in a creek near an overpass. The incident occurred on Highway 111 southbound near … Read More

Veteran, sexual assault survivor to speak Oct. 5 at Tennessee Tech

U.S. Coast Guard veteran, military sexual assault survivor and survivor advocate Kori Cioca will speak in Tennessee Tech University’s Derryberry Hall Auditorium Thursday, Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m.

Cioca speaks at military bases and events around the country as an advocate for survivors of military sexual assault following her own traumatic experience.

Her story was featured in the documentary “The Invisible War,” which sought to expose military sex crimes and the fight of survivors seeking justice. The film was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 85th Academy Awards and was a Sundance Audience Award winner.
