Kenneth Virgle McCormick

Kenneth Virgle McCormick, 73, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 15, 2017, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Mr. McCormick was born June 17, 1944, in White County, to Beecher Virgle McCormick and Cora Kate Wilmoth McCormick.

He served 28 years with Sparta Police Department and retired as a lieutenant uniform commander.   He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in Vietnam.

Mr. McCormick was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael Lane McCormick.

Survivors include his wife, Jonna Faye Dickerson McCormick, of Sparta; son, Kenneth Wayne McCormick, of Sparta; brothers, Gordon Lane (Sue) McCormick, of Sparta, Donald McCormick, of Nolensville; and several nieces … Read More


George Junior Brymer

George Junior Brymer, 81, passed away Sept. 15, 2017.

Mr. Brymer was born Dec. 1, 1935, in Spencer, to Carl Brymer and Cleo Simmons Brymer.

He was a member of the Spencer Church of God and the Van Buren County Rescue Squad and had worked in timber most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jeff Brymer; granddaughter, Kayleigh Armstrong; and sister, Estell Brymer.

Jeannette Harville Stewart

Jeannette Harville Stewart, 79, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 15, 2017, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Mrs. Stewart was born Feb. 27, 1938, in Plant City, Florida, to Quinnie P. Harville and Sofia Thompson Harville.

She owned a daycare for children and was a homemaker. She was an avid reader.

Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold C. Stewart; a daughter, Sophia Lynn Smothers; and a sister Elizabeth Harville.

Helen Elaine Walker Hodge

Helen Elaine Walker Hodge, 44, of Sparta, passed from this life, on Sept. 16, 2017, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Hodge was born Aug. 11, 1973, in Smithville. She was the daughter of Harold Young and Janice Brymer Young.

She is survived by her children, Terri Hodge (Morris), Courtney Walker, and Casey Walker, and special friend, Charles Green, all of Sparta.

Funeral service was 2 p.m., Sept. 18, 2017, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Young Cemetery. Dewey Young officiated.

Pallbearers were Dillon Frazier, Casey Walker, J.T. Randolph, Jackie Brown, and Austin Cunningham. Honorary pallbearers were Eric Miller, Tyler Mille, and Dillon Sims.

Van Buren “Meet and Mingle” with law enforcement held Sept. 16

Van Buren County law enforcement was honored on Sept. 16, 2017, at a breakfast “Meet and Mingle,” which was held at the Van Buren County Fair Building. The event was sponsored by Caney Fork Electric Cooperative, Citizens Tri-County Bank, and Ben Lomand Connect.

Rotary Club adds 1,300th name to wall at Veterans Park

The Rotary Club of Sparta is pleased to announce that the 1,300th White County/Sparta veterans name has been added to the Veterans Park.

Donna Fare, Rotary Club of Sparta Veterans Park Committee, said, “The Veterans Park continues to grow to the point that more panels are needed to inscribe names on the wall of honor.”

When the “Eternal Flame” was lit at the Veterans Park, on Aug. 14, 2015, Mayor Jeff Young, said, “The City of Sparta would like to thank the Rotary Club for all of their excellent work. They have really done a great job with this park.”

Rotary Club distributes dictionaries to third grade students

The Rotary Club of Sparta is pleased to announce that every third grade student in White County, including home-schooled, received a dictionary. Rotary members visited each school to make a personal presentation to the students.

Don Randolph, Rotary member, said, “The students were very excited to receive their dictionaries. In some cases, a dictionary is one of the few books in the household.”

For many years at the beginning of each new school year, Rotary delivers hundreds of dictionaries free-of-charge, to all third-grade students.

American Legion, Sparta Woman’s Club conduct 9/11 ceremony

GFWC Sparta Woman’s Club and the American Legion jointly held a ceremony, on Sept. 11, 2017, in remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists attacked New York, and thousands lost their lives. Sherry Hickey, president of Sparta Woman’s Club, served as mistress of ceremonies. Chaplain Marjorie Stevens read a special prayer for the day, and secretary Mary Dingwall told about the history of 9/11. Donna Fare ended the day with facts about the Veterans’ Cemetery, which is a fundraising project for Sparta Woman’s Club. International Dot Day

BonDeCroft Elementary School recently celebrated International Dot Day, which was inspired by the book “The Dot,” by Peter Reynolds. Students created artwork featuring dots and displayed them in the gym for the entire school to view as a Dot Museum.

Davidson receives ten year sentence for manslaughter

A man who has been found guilty on multiple charges involved with a hit and run incident in White County has officially been sentenced to serve 14-consecutive years.

Steven Davidson Jr. recently appeared with his attorney before Judge David Patterson in the Criminal Court of White County. Earlier this morning, Sept. 18, Davidson was sentenced for the charges of Voluntary Manslaughter and Vehicular Homicide by recklessness.

On May 10, 2017, Davidson was found guilty of the two charges during a jury trail regarding his involvement in a hit and run incident that occurred in White County that resulted in the death of a male pedestrian.

The White County Republican Party will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, at White County Courthouse, in the third floor courtroom. The speaker will be former State Senator Mae Beavers (R-District 17). Beavers is one of five Republicans who have announced a run for governor of Tennessee. Everyone is invited.
