The Warriors struggle in the fourth quarter against Jackson County and fall 64-59. The Warriors were led by Masyn Winningham who finished with 24 points. The Warriors will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Cookeville.

Warriorettes hold on late

The Warriorettes hold on late to pick up the 58-45 win. The Warriorettes were led by Hannah Leftwich who finished the night with a double-double. Leftwich finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Gracie Dodgen also chipped in 13 points. The Warriorettes will return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Cookeville.

The Warriorettes lead the Jackson County Lady Blue Devils 27-23 at the half. Hannah Leftwich leads the Warriorettes with 11 points and Gracie Dodgen chipped in 7 points.


Marquee fire

Received reports that the marquee at Oldham Theater, on Liberty Square, was on fire. Sparta Fire Department, Sparta Police Department, and other emergency services personnel are now at the scene.

Sparta-White County Rescue Squad rescues trapped K-9

Thanks to the efforts of the dedicated members of the Sparta-White County Rescue Squad, a lost hunting companion has been rescued and safely returned to her owners.

On Jan. 26, 2018, at approximately 2:30 p.m., members with the Sparta-White County Rescue Squad received notification of a possible missing k-9. According to initial reports – the K-9, a beagle named Cheyenne, was on a hunting expedition with its owners in the Lost Creek area of White County.

While small game hunting around 10:30 a.m, Cheyenne reportedly chased a rabbit down a 25-foot hole and became trapped. Unable to recover Cheyenne, her owners, Guy and Tyler Wilson, contacted members of … Read More


Meadows celebrates 50 years at White County Farmers CO-OP

George “Bud” Meadows celebrated his 50th anniversary, with White County Farmers CO-OP, on Jan. 25, 2018.

Meadows was hired Jan. 25, 1968, by the original general manager, Leon Luke. Meadows is 73 years old and is still the first employee in the parking lot every morning. When he was first hired, he worked in the old CO-OP building, on Moore Street. The landscaping and building of the new building started in 1967, except for the fertilize building that was built in the early 60’s. They moved into this building in March 1968.

Outstanding fairs honored at 96th annual convention

Tennessee Department of Agriculture recently presented awards to 54 of the top county, regional and state agricultural fairs.

“Agricultural education is as important as it has ever been,” Commissioner of Agriculture Jai Templeton said. “County fairs provide an opportunity for communities across Tennessee to learn about the largest industry in our state while enjoying tradition and making new memories.“

Approximately 900 people attended the Fairs Merit Awards recognition dinner program during the 96th Annual Convention of the Tennessee Association of Fairs (TAF) held January 18-21, 2018, in Nashville.

The top award went to the Rhea County Fair when it was named the Champion of Champions Fair for 2017. … Read More


Edith L.V. Young

Edith L.V. Young, 95, of Smithville, passed away Jan. 25, 2018, at NHC Healthcare of Smithville.

Mrs. Young was born June 13, 1922.

She was a member of the Mt. View Baptist Church and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Amerce Young; parents, Ollie Monroe Barnes, Sarah Della Barnes Redmon; stepfather, Thomas Redmon; two sisters, Irene Barnes, Martha Ann Foster; brother, Alvie Barnes; and three infants, Wilma Dean, Arlie Edward, and James Allan.
