Karen the Clown back for one night only…maybe

Karen Morgan, also known as Karen the Clown, has been “clowning around” since 1980. She explained that her father was a clown for the Detroit Fire Department in Michigan and he is the one who inspired her to become a clown herself.

“My dad was a clown,” said Morgan. “We did ballgames, hospitals, and Thanksgiving Day parades.”

Chili cook-off benefit

Who: Everyone is invited

What: Chili cook-off (Benefit for Greg McWilliams – Greg was seriously injured while working with farm equipment. All proceeds will benefit the McWilliams family. The goal is to purchase 500 gallons propane, install gas heater, and supplement Greg’s loss of income.)

When: 2-5 p.m. ( Dinner includes chili, hot dogs, chips, drink, and dessert – Adults, $10, and children ages 4-15, $5)

Shirley Ann Trovarelli

Shirley Ann Trovarelli, 85, of Sparta, passed from this life Oct. 28, 2018, after a brief illness.

Born May 8, 1933, in Detroit Michigan, she moved to Sparta, in 1973.

Mrs. Trovarelli was known and loved by many friends in White County for her kind, giving nature.

She enjoyed cooking and sharing love through food. She owned and operated Liberty Square Market and Deli, on the square, in Sparta for over a decade; managed the buffet at KFC for many years; and, then in retirement, delivered meals as a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program. She never met a stranger and greeted everyone with a smile.

Sheila Louise Officer Bussell

Sheila Louise Officer Bussell, 89, passed away peacefully, on Oct. 27, 2018, at a memory care facility, in Troy, Michigan.

Mrs. Bussell was born June 25, 1929, in Sparta, to Simpson Dudley Officer and Notie Anne Snodgrass Officer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 54 years, George Bussell; by her devoted uncle, Charles Snodgrass; and her daughter-in-law, Karen Hodder Bussell.

Mrs. Bussell was a dedicated teacher’s aide for over 20 years in the Dearborn Public School System.

Survivors include two sons, Charles (Patricia) Bussell, James (Sharon) Bussell, and grandchildren, Kelley and Gregory Bussell.

Howard Wayne Young, 66, of Sparta, passed away Sunday Oct. 28, 2018, at his residence.

Mr. Young was born Oct. 17, 1952, to James Edward Young and Anna Pauline Cumby Young.

He was a roofer and carpenter. He loved fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Mr. Young was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Brenda N. Young Spivey; brother, Edward Lee “Pete” Young; great-grandson, Brenden Chance “J.J.” Jones Jr.; and a son-in-law, Sam K. Cravens.

Mildred Louise McCurry Alexander, 69, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 28, 2018, at Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, in Sparta.

Ms. Alexander was born July 24, 1949, in Sparta, to Lloyd McCurry and Lona Bussell McCurry.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Phyllis Webb, Darlene McCurry; and brothers, Charles McCurry and Leroy McCurry.

Fatal accident on South Jefferson Avenue in Cookeville

On Oct. 29, 2018 at 5:26 p.m., Cookeville police officers responded to 120 South Jefferson Ave. about  a motor vehicle accident. A 2014 Ford Escape driven by 64-year-old Gerald Champion, of Cookeville, left the roadway while traveling on South Jefferson Avenue, striking a parked 2008 Nissan Altima. Mr. Champion was transported to Cookeville Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead at the hospital. Initial investigation indicates Mr. Champion suffered a medical event prior to the crash.

This crash remains under investigation. If anyone witnessed the crash and has not yet spoken with police, please call the Traffic Enforcement Division of the Cookeville Police Department at (931) 520-5370 or the

Warriorettes host Trunk or Treat
