Hodge convicted in criminal court of soliciting minor

A Sparta man has been convicted of soliciting a minor to engage in the act of aggravated sexual battery after the testimony of a 13-year-old girl.

Austin Andrew Hodge was found guilty of the aforementioned charge when he appeared before Criminal Court Judge David Patterson, on April 30, 2019, according to Bruce MacLeod, assistant district attorney general for the 13th Judicial District who prosecuted the case.

MacLeod said the jury deliberated approximately six minutes before finding the defendant guilty. In addition to the teen’s testimony, a video of the defendant “talking about the crime” assisted in obtaining the guilty verdict, according to MacLeod.

Scoglione’s bond set at $100,000 for drug charges, evading arrest

The bond for a 56-year-old Sparta man has been set at $100,000 after an arrest on multiple drug charges and evading arrest.

On April 23, 2019, at approximately 1:05 p.m., Deputy Brandon Young, of White County Sheriff Department, was on Cashdollar Cove Rd., on routine patrol, when he reportedly observed a red truck in which the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

Alleged gang member recently arrested in White County

A 22-year-old from Chattanooga who was recently arrested in White County on three separate charges was later identified as a gang member from Hamilton County after law enforcement officials ran a background check on the male subject through the National Crime Information Center.

According to the arrest warrant issued in White County for Lavon M. Watkins, 22, on April 23, 2019, Deputy Steven Page, of the White County Sheriff Department, conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for speeding on Highway 111.

Page stated in the affidavit that he smelled a distinct odor emanating from the vehicle, which he believed to be the smell of marijuana.… CONTINUED

SWAT Team from WCMS presents tobacco education to fourth graders

The SWAT Team (Stop With All Tobacco) that is comprised of White County Middle School students recently spent time teaching all of the district fourth-grade students about the dangers of tobacco and vaping.

The SWAT Team is an extension of Coordinated School Health and is supervised by Beverly Dronebarger, director of the Family Resource Center. According to Dronebarger, members of the team were chosen through teacher recommendation.

“This is a great group of students,” Dronebarger said. “They have been eager to learn the facts behind the dangers of tobacco use as well as very energetic in their presentations.”

Dickie JayLee Baker, 84, of the Ravenscroft community, passed away May 2, 2019, at his residence.

Mr. Baker was born Nov. 20, 1934, in Sparta, to JayCee and Gusta Bee Baker.

He was a logger and a mechanic, specializing on Datsun vehicles.    Mr. Baker was preceded death by his parents; his wife, Rebecca Susan McBride Baker; brothers, Tom, Bud, and James Baker; sister, Peggy Tindle; and two grandchildren, Jerita Baker and Jim Bob Exum.

Survivors include his seven children, Jerry (Tonia) Baker, Terry Baker, Sally Stewart, Rick (Janice) Baker, Nathan (Connie) Baker, Jackie (Sharrie) Baker, Kimberly (Clint) Carter; 25 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brother, Sam Barker; and several nieces … CONTINUED

Man dies after struck by car

A 78-year-old Sparta man has died after he reportedly stepped into traffic on Bockman Way.

According to Trooper Jacob Groce, of Tennessee Highway Patrol, at approximately 9:22 a.m., on May 3, 2019, Russell Giampetro, 78, of North Main Street, in Sparta, was hit by a 2004 Buick Park Avenue, which was driven by 82-year-old Norma Grace Kirby, of the Bear Cove community of White County.

Groce said Kirby was traveling westbound, on Bockman Way, when Giampetro reportedly walked into the path of her vehicle.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Bockman Way and Marchbanks Street, in the vicinity of Hunter Funeral Home.

The Warriors, who are now under new head coach Mark Frasier, have been in spring training the last few days. They traveled to Warren County to take part in a controlled practice between the two teams. Frasier commented on the practice. “There were some bright spots at times but definitely a lot of work to do in all areas. The offense played physical, however, defensively, we had some confusion on assignments. I am proud of the kids all spring with their attitudes and effort. On April 30, the White County High School soccer team celebrated senior night. After the pre-game festivities, which honored the senior members of the soccer team, the game began. Sparta started strong by scoring the first goal of the evening at the 34:00 minute of the match when Will Cheek broke away and drove the ball with finesse past the Baxter goalie. Cheek extended the lead with another hard shot to the back of the net at the 24:00 minute mark in the first half. Upperman got on the board after a foul was called near the net.
