This year, the Aaron Shafer Memorial Road Race and Time Trial is on April 22. If you can help as a corner marshal or lead or wheel driver, please call or text Jeannie at (931) 265-8004. We’d love to get to know you and include you as a friend and volunteer.

Routes Start/Finish at Downtown Sparta

70-MILE COURSE PRO 1/2/3:

Some changes have been made to “going out” leg. A long stretch of new pavement has made it much better to now turn right on Blue Springs/Mack Floyd just before the 1.5 mile mark and stay on that till back on Hwy 84 and continue original route. The new leg has much less vehicle traffic, no rumble strip in the center, and new pavement on all the Mack Floyd Section. Once back on Hwy 84 further North than in the past, the route will then continue to the Mill Creek climb.
The 70 mile route for the upper categories will do 2 laps of the Mill Creek Climb loop then back to the downtown start/finish as in the past(i.e. 2015)

An out and back course with substantial rolling and one significant stinger at the beginning of the turn onto Blue Springs Rd from Hwy 84 (Monterey Hwy). Starts at the same location of road race. The TT uses a portion of the outward section of the road race this year. The TT is an extended version of the TT used in some years past when starting from the downtown area. After the finish of the TT it is a little over a mile warm down ride back to where it started.

The Aaron Shafer Memorial Foundation was started in 2010 to promote what Aaron was committed to and passionate about: making Sparta – his town – a better place. As one of the Sparta-White County Chamber Board of Directors, he put his efforts into bringing people to Sparta. On the advice of some friends, he and others started planning the first bike race ever held in White County. He believed if people would come to Sparta to ride, they would bring their families, eat, shop and discover the beauty of Sparta and White County – and come back to hike, bike, and spend time in Sparta. Unfortunately, two months before the first race in 2010, Aaron was killed in an automobile accident.

The goals set by the Foundation Board of Directors are to promote healthy living and bring others to White County to see the natural beauty it offers. Profits from the race have gone to scholarships, the Rescue Squad, nursing homes, and local school clubs and projects.
