On hand for the check presentation were (L-R) Rotary Club President Steve Ware, Joyce Tatum, and District PolioPlus Chair John Downs.

The Rotary Club of Sparta recently made a memorial contribution to honor of longtime Sparta Rotarian Alan Tatum who passed away last February.

Outgoing Rotary Club President Steve Ware said, “Alan was a dear friend, a healer, and a living example of Rotary’s motto of ‘Service above Self.’ It is fitting that we recognize him by making a donation in his honor in support of Rotary’s #1 objective, the global eradication of polio.”

Over the past 30 years, Rotarians have contributed countless hours and nearly $2 billion to fight this crippling disease. While the number of polio cases has fallen from more than 1,000 per day, in 1985, to just 12 cases worldwide, in 2018, Rotarians remain committed to completely ridding the world of polio. The club’s donation will be matched by funds from Rotary International and the Gates Foundation to bring the total amount going to support the polio eradication effort to $3,750.
