Sparta’s 15-year-old Babe Ruth All Star team saw their quest for a state title come to a close with their second loss on Sunday.
After falling into the loser’s bracket with a loss to a talented Kingsport team, the Sparta squad was not able to stave off elimination when they ran into another experienced travel team, the Franklin Coyotes. The Coyotes rolled to the 21-5 win over Sparta Sunday afternoon in Fayetteville.
Three Sparta pitchers, Chaz Williams, Daniel Winnett and Ethan Roberts, took the mound, but couldn’t stem the tide. Franklin pounded out 15 hits. Those hits combined with several errors, eight walks and three hit batsmen accounted for the large offensive output of the Coyotes.
Sparta scored three of their runs in the third inning. Winnett and Williams walked and were moved up by Rhett Blair’s single. Winnett scored on a wild pitch. Williams and Blair both came home on a Roberts’ single.
In the fourth, Winnett was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a Dustin Cole double, but both were left stranded.
In the fifth, walks to Blair and Dylan Roberts followed by an error plated Blair and Seth Davis for Sparta’s final two runs of the game.
Blair and Cole led Sparta with two hits each.
Sparta manager, Dan Cummings, commented, “Sparta should be proud of these 10 boys who went the distance logging eight games in 11 days and also of their parents who traveled over 1300 miles during the tournaments.”
The 15-year-old team finished runner-up in their first tournament earning the spot in the state. They opened state play with a win over Franklin County before running into a pair of buzz saws in their next two games.
