Billy Elkins, 80, of Baxter, passed away April 4, 2017, at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Mr. Elkins was born July 18, 1936, in Myra, Kentucky, to Andrew J. Elkins Molly Meek Elkins.
He was a retired yardmaster for Conrail Railroad and later worked as an electrician for Lakeland Electric. Mr. Elkins served four years in the U.S. Air Force where he was also a member of the boxing team. He was a member of Pistole Baptist Church.
Mr. Elkins was preceded in death by a brother, Ermil Elkins; sister, Jenny Hassay; grandson, Sam Keener; and great-granddaughter, Maya Grace Herren.
Survivors include his wife of almost 61 years, Patricia Elkins, of Baxter; two sons, Michael W. (Ginger) Elkins, of Florence, Kentucky, Andrew C. (Tina) Elkins, of Cookeville; three daughters, Sharon L. Lawson, Janet L. (Danny) Richmond, all of Cookeville, Susan R. (Steve) Wharton, of Springfield, Kentucky; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Oral J. (Violet) Elkins, of Poland, Ohio, Harold (Scarlett) Elkins, of Del Rio, Texas; and three sisters, Phyllis (Bob) Litavetz, of Youngstown, Ohio, Betty (Mel) Rice, of Huntington Beach, California, and Patty Maynard, of Pikeville, Kentucky.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., April 8, 2017, at Pistole Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Saylors Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Veterans’ Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m., April 7, at the funeral home, and after 9 a.m., April 8, at the church. Michael Elkins and Clint Walker will officiate.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
