Budget committee discusses school system and jail

The county budget committee met Oct. 1 to discuss funds that channel through their books.

Chad Marcum, White County director of finance, explained general fund issues to the committee. These issues included:

  • Health department program grant – This grant would allow the department to reclassify funds labeled “instructional supplies” to another category so the money can be spent on other items.
  • Reallocation of litter control – Litter control has recently been under the sheriff department’s control. That office would like to turn it back over to the county executive’s office to manage. The committee stated it is waiting on Sheriff Steve Page to agree to reallocation in writing before it can act on the matter.
  • The listing of general purpose school funds – All funds must be approved by the school board.

Under new business, the committee addressed the ankle bracelet system the White County Sheriff Department was interested in implementing. After a discussion about who was responsible for the decision, the committee decided that it was not a budget committee matter. County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson expressed he will talk with the sheriff and report back to the committee any future findings.

The next county budget committee meeting is scheduled for Nov. 5, 2018, following the solid waste committee meeting.
