Cajun comes to Sparta

When Mike Villeret and his family moved to Sparta from Louisiana, the family had a dream of bringing a little of their heritage with them, so they opened a Cajun-style restaurant.
Kitty’s Cajun Kitchen is named after Mike’s wife and is open seven days a week. The restaurant offers a variety of Cajun specials, as well as soup, salads and sandwiches.
“We are hoping to give people the opportunity to taste some different foods,” said Mike.
“People sometimes think Cajun food is really spicy, but that is not true, and we don’t cook with a lot of spices.”
Kitty’s is a partnership between the family, including Mike, Kitty, their two daughters, Jennifer and Amber, and Amber’s husband, Trent Duhe.
The family remodeled the building and opened the eatery Aug. 14. They have been getting good reviews from customers.
Amber and Jennifer have experience in the restaurant business, and Kitty is an experienced Cajun cook.
“When we first started taking about opening a restaurant, it was a joke,” said Mike, “We were in Memphis to escape the hurricane and started talking about moving away and going into business for ourselves. The joke became a dream.”
Two months ago, Mike moved his family, including his wife, three daughters, his son-in-law, and two grandchildren, from Louisiana to Sparta in hopes of finding a calmer, cooler climate and a safer place to raise the grandchildren. The family has found all of that and a lot more, they said.
“We love it here,” said Mike.
“We knew we would like it, but we didn’t know it would be this great.”
When Mike decided to uproot his family and move hundreds of miles from anyone they knew, their relatives and friends couldn’t understand why.
After coming to visit, he said the rest of the family now understands why they would want to live here.
The Villerets still have one married son living in Louisiana.
Kitty’s Cajun Kitchen is on North Spring Street beside Terry’s Auto Sales and Sparta Block and Tank Company.
The restaurant is open 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday-Saturday, and 11 a.m.-2 p.m., on Sunday. Kitty’s also offers take-out and delivery.
