Carolyn Waterfield Sayles Salzman Simpkins

(Edith) Carolyn Waterfield Sayles Salzman Simpkins, 78, passed away Nov. 2, 2017, at Poppen Hospice Residence, in Muskegon, Michigan.
She was born on Nov. 4, 1938, in Norfolk, Virginia. She was the daughter of William E. Waterfield and Agnes D. Waterfield Marcum.
Educated in Norfolk public schools, Ms. Simpkins was a cheerleader at Maury High School.
Always creative, she used her artistic skills doing crafts with her six children and making school costumes for them. While raising her children, she worked at home as a contract artist, painting personalized “picnic basket” purses for women around the southeastern United States.
Ms. Simpkins later worked as a staff member of Tidewater Rape Information Services, in Virginia Beach, and as activities director of River Garden Hebrew Home skilled nursing facility, in Jacksonville, Florida. She was an avid reader all of her life.
She was preceded in death by two children, Rodney S. Sayles and Daniel M. Sayles.
Survivors include her sister, Frances W. Flint, of Muskegon, Michigan; her stepfather, Samuel Marcum, of Sparta; four children, Frank Sayles Jr. (Bonnie) of Tifton, Georgia; Rickey L. Sayles, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Tim C. Sayles, of Antioch, Illinois; Lori Kowalski (Al), of Muskegon, Michigan; a stepson, Marvin Simpkins Jr., of Perry, Georgia; and five grandchildren.
A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
