While my name may be absent from the staff box of the newspaper very soon, working here has been a wonderful, very educational experience.
After nearly six years of taking photos, chasing police cars and sticking my nose into other business around the county and then having the information printed in the newspaper, I am stepping into another opportunity and challenge at the Chamber of Commerce.
It has truly been a blessing and a fun experience to entertain and educate the readers of The Expositor. I have met so many wonderful people around the county and appreciate everyone’s help during the course of my reporting career.
Because a … Read More

Graduation time is here and I grabbed my senior annual this morning to take a trip back, way back, way, way back. Okay, I’ll stop right there.
This year – 2008 – my graduating class will celebrate (or commiserate) the 30th anniversary of our high school graduation.
Recently I have been receiving emails and calls about plans to get together at a football game in the fall at the old Alma mater, Germantown High School in G’town Tennessee.
There have been reunions in the past but for one reason or another, I have never attended. Now I must admit, I am looking forward to seeing this group of … Read More

LOOKS JUST LIKE DAD.

This column is dedicated to two children who aren’t even here yet. So Happy Mother’s Day to those expectant moms.
My niece Christy and her husband Heath are pregnant, due in July. Nephew Josh and his wife Allie are pregnant, too, and they are due in October. Christy is having a boy, and Josh is expecting to be surrounded by pink items.
The boy is going to be named Hayden Russell McCallen. Of course, that may change and he may be named something else when the time comes.
So Hayden, (or whatever your name is) this is your Aunt Jo. These are a few … Read More

I want to send a personal invitation to each and every one of you. At 7 p.m., Sunday night, May 4, 2008, the combined choirs will present the final spring musical presentation at Gum Springs Baptist Church. The choir will number nearly 100 voices, harmonizing the words of  Jesus, the One and Only, based on the Beth Moore Bible Study and arranged by Travis Cottrell.
Gum Springs Baptist Church is located at 5454 Franks Ferry Road, just off Old Kentucky Road in Walling.

And it is about time, too

Like it or not, the way trends have been going for the past couple of decades many of us will end our days here on earth as a resident in a nursing home.
Unlike our mothers and grandparents, who cared for elderly family members in their homes, in today’s society where nearly every adult member of a household is employed outside the home, the choice most families make at that difficult time is to find the right nursing home for their loved one. And that choice is often made with finances taking an upper hand in the decision-making process.
In Tennessee legislature there is an act that is … Read More

Springing back into the memory bank

I feel so sorry for the kids these days. They are missing out on a lot of things I fondly remember from days past.
Here are a few things that every spring, seem to bounce into my mind from days gone by, (and I know, there are a whole lot of you who remember them, too.)
Games like Red Rover, and duck, duck goose, with lunches packed by Mom into a brown paper bag. Peanut butter and crackers, handmade with real peanut butter and crackers, and a Tupperware cup of Kool-Aid. And we ate it, because we were hungry and tired from playing, even if the food was … Read More

Curse at me? I will disconnect.

If you have any questions about a story I may write, feel free to call me at the office, 836-3284, but I will tell you right now – if you have a need to cuss at me, I will disconnect.
In the process of doing my job, I make some people mad. Probably because a big part of my job is reporting what happens in law enforcement. So I often write about people who have crashes, people who are arrested and people who have other dealings with police officers.
And I get my information directly from official sources. As a journalist, my attempt is to present the facts, … Read More
