Cemetery walkway construction halted

City of Sparta employees had begun working Friday on constructing a walkway that was set to run through the Old City Cemetery that sits directly behind the old jail, on South Church Street. However, city workers reportedly unearthed some unidentified stones that led Ross Fann, City of Sparta public works director, to immediately stop the project. Archaeological experts from University of Tennessee arrived Monday afternoon to evaluate the situation.
