Chamber discusses mural budget

Chamber board members discussed during their Nov. 28 meeting the future plans for a proposed community mural and setting a budget for the project.
The purpose of the mural is to highlight characteristics, symbols, and trademarks of Sparta and White County. The hope of the board members is that this new mural will create a photo-taking opportunity for locals and visitors alike.
Since July of this year, the board has been working on developing plans and ideas for what would be included in the mural and narrowing down a potential site. The board has been working with Tommy Narramore, well-known White County artist, to develop a sketch.
During the September and October board meetings, the Chamber had focused on placing the proposed mural on the old Sparta Hardware building, at the corner of South Church Street and Bockman Way, near Liberty Square. The board has already received permission from the property owner and tenants of the building.
However, during the November meeting, the board held a brief discussion on another possible site, which is located on Bockman Way (Donnie Daniels’ building). The board took no action about on this matter.
Another item that was discussed about the proposed mural was the budget and how to secure the funding necessary to cover the costs. After some discussion, it was determined that the budget for the mural should be set at approximately $5,000.
The Chamber will be soliciting donations from businesses and community members and organizing a fundraising drive to help finance the cost of the mural project. The board is still waiting for a proposed sketch before moving forward.
In other items of business, the board:
-Announced new post cards with five new local designs have been ordered and will be available for purchase soon
-Announced Christmas ornaments are now available for purchase at the Chamber office
-Announced Jingle Mingle event has been set for Dec. 14
