Sweet treats seem to go with any occasion, especially cupcakes with a swirl of brightly colored frosty resting on top, fresh baked cookies, and cake.

Before a month ago, residents of Sparta would have to drive all the way to Cookeville to get cakes and sweets for a party, but now it’s only a few minutes’ drive to Charity’s Bake Shop, in Sparta.

Owner Charity Lowhorn sits at one of her tables in the reception area, researching the schematics of an espresso machine. Even from her seat, she had no trouble trying to figure out how to hook up a filtration system, answering questions, and running a bakery.

Lowhorn’s mom and dad, Carol and Kenneth Winnett, work diligently behind the display case. Kenneth Winnett works on the espresso machine, while Carol Winnett attends to the fresh bread that is made in the shop every day, and Lowhorn elaborates on what got her started in baking and bringing a business from Cookeville to Sparta, where her shop had been the last four years.

“I was born and raised here and have always liked to cook and bake,” said Lowhorn. “I went to culinary school and found that I loved to bake and knew that it was what I wanted to do. I have always wanted to bring something home.”

Lowhorn explained that, so far, they have been doing very well, and she has had numerous loyal customers follow her from Cookeville. She stated that she is looking forward to working Wine on the West Side with her crew. The event will take place in Cookeville, in August.

“We set up two tents and lay out all of our treats,” said Lowhorn. “They buy tickets to get into this event, and they get to try wines and craft beer, and we are there when they need something sweet to eat.”

Charity’s Bake Shop also does weddings, birthdays, and showers. Lowhorn stated she does catering as well. She advised that if anyone would like an event catered, call her in advance because she tends to be booked.

For anyone having a birthday or a special event coming up that requires fluffy cakes or cupcakes with buttercream icing, Charity’s Bake Shop can be reached by calling (931) 256-8344 or by walking in at 406 N. Spring St., in Sparta.
