In the past few seasons, most cross country meets White County High School was involved in, the runners basically competed as individuals due to not enough runners for team points.
That was not the case Saturday at the Macon County Invitational.
Both the girls and boys had enough competitors to qualify in team points. The girls’ team finished seventh out of 10 teams in the meet. Freshman Morgan Voyles was the top finisher for WCHS placing 14th overall with a time of 23:22 in her first competitive high school run. Alex Stover, a sophomore, finished 21st with a time of 24:13. Other female runners for WCHS were Ali Justus (26:15), Krista King (29:05), Mira Gonzalez (32:17), Rachel Kolodziei (33:22) and Sara Shanks (33:44).
The boys’ team finished 9th out of 13 teams. Casey Bales was the top male finisher for WCHS with a time of 18:22. That was good enough for a 13th place finish overall. Other runners for WCHS were Zach Hodge (20:57), Kade Mayberry (21:10), Jonathan Craig (21:37), Jack Bales (21:56) and Ron Fry (23:50). Billy Buck also competed but had to drop out mid race due to injury.
Coach Stephanie Naaktgeboren had this to say, “Overall, I was very excited with today’s results. I thought both our teams ran strong races and all improved their times from Tuesday’s meet. To be this strong at the beginning of the season is very encouraging and I’m looking forward to watching their times continue to drop at the Voyles Classic in Smyrna on Tuesday. I am proud of our young, promising team.”
The cross country team will travel to Smyrna for the Voyles Classic, the preseason race of the Midstate Cross Country Association, which is named in memory of WCHS runner, Markie Voyles. That race is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start.
