Delpha Octavia Winstead Mason, 70, peacefully passed away at her home and birth place, in Walling, Tennessee, on the morning of Aug. 10, 2017, after her long and valiant battle with cancer. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the prayers and support of her family and friends carried her through more than a year of grueling chemotherapy and radiation. While in the end, cancer won the battle for her body, she won the gift of everlasting life, for “precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints” (Psalms 116: 15).

Delpha was born in Walling, Tennessee, on April 16, 1947, to Quill and Eula Winstead, and was the youngest of her siblings, Wanda and Juanita. Raised in White County Tennessee, Delpha graduated from White County High School and worked as a beautician until she married Master Sgt. Roger “Dale” Mason, on March 17, 1969. She faithfully supported her husband and his Army career until his retirement, in 1983, which is when she returned to Walling with her husband and two children, Roger and Melissa.

Delpha, a dedicated and hard working woman, spent time as an employee at Doyle Shirt Factory; Findlay Industries, in  Morrison, Tennessee; and Wal-Mart in Sparta, Tennessee. In each profession, she was admired and loved by her co-workers. The role she took most seriously and remained 100 percent dedicated to throughout her life was that of wife, mother, grandmother, and daughter. Delpha’s greatest joys in life were gardening, tending to her flowers, taking care of her home, and spending time with her family. She had a gift for cooking and enjoyed feeding the people she loved. She was a very humble woman, and each person she met was impacted by her sincere personality combined with her ability to “tell it like it is,” her amazing sense of humor, and her infectious laughter. She is greatly loved and will be missed by all.

Delpha is survived by her husband, Dale, of 48 years; her children, Roger Mason and his wife, Tracy, of Quebeck, Tennessee, and Melissa Quick and her husband, Donnie, of Dalton, Georgia. She is the beloved Nana of Erika Poe and her husband Adam, of Gastonia, North Carolina, and Selena Quick of Dalton, Georgia. She has two precious great-grandsons, Brody and Roman Poe. Delpha leaves behind her two loving sisters Wanda Moore, of Nashville, Tennessee, and Juanita Jacobs and husband Stanly, of Portland, Oregon, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Aug. 12, 2017, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, in Sparta, with Ronnie Taylor and James Bowlin officiating. Burial will follow in Jericho Cemetery, in Quebeck. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., Aug. 11, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers serving Delpha are as follows: Todd Mason (nephew), Thurman Mason (brother-in-law), Adam Poe (grandson-in-law), Wade Humphrey, Terry Denny, and Marion Wright.

The family is grateful for the kindness, love, and support provided by their family and friends and the compassion, care, and comfort provided by Avalon Hospice.

It was Delpha’s request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Happy Haven Children’s Home. in Cookeville Tennessee: 2311 Wakefield Drive, Cookeville, Tennessee 38501 (931-526-2052). Please make checks payable to “Happy Haven” and include “In memory of Delpha Mason.”
