Sparta Police Department responded to a call about
a vehicle that flipped on Highway 111, a short distance north of Roosevelt Drive, with possible injuries to the occupants.
Just before 3 p.m., Jan. 16, 2006, Sgt. Dale Dodson and Patrolman Chris Bennett arrived on the scene of the one-vehicle crash and came into contact with the driver, Juan Gaspar, 36, of Cookeville.
Gaspar was driving a green 1994 Mazda MPV utility vehicle.
According to Chief Jeff Guth, Gaspar was traveling south on Highway 111. The driver told the officers he fell asleep and ran off the road into median.
The vehicle traveled approximately 450 feet before striking a road sign, flipping in the median and coming to a rest upside down.
Gaspar was not injured in the crash and was charged with driving without a license and financial responsibility for not having proof of insurance. Guth said the vehicle belonged to Miqual Mateo, of Cookeville.
