Eaglettes struggle in Heritage Christmas Tournament

Sierra Delong gets ready to go up for a shot in last week’s tournament in Heritage High School.

The Van Buren County Eaglettes had a tough week last week in the Heritage High School Christmas Tournament, finishing the week 0-3.

The Eaglettes lost in the first round of the tournament to Lee County High School out of Kentucky, 46-35. In the second round, The Eaglettes were unable to pull out the win, falling to Allen County High School out of Kentucky, 55-48. In the final game of the tournament, the Eaglettes lost to Teays Valley Christian out of West Virginia, 78-37.

In the first round of the tournament, the Eaglettes jumped out to an early 10-8 lead over Lee County at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Lee County outscored the Eaglettes 18-9 in the quarter and led 26-19 heading into halftime.

After halftime, the Eaglettes were outscored 10-4 in the third quarter and trailed Lee County 36-23 heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Eaglettes cut into Lee County’s lead, outscoring them 18-14 in the quarter, but Lee County pulled out the win over the Eaglettes by a final score of 46-35.

Mallory Christian led the Eaglettes with 18 points. Hannah Sullivan added 8 points, and Lily Fredricks chipped in 5 points. Emma Scoggins rounded out the Eaglettes’ scoring with 4 points.

In the second round, the Eaglettes trailed Allen County 15-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Allen County added to their lead, outscoring the Eaglettes 19-10 in the quarter and led the Eaglettes 34-17 heading into the locker room.

After halftime, the Eaglettes outscored Allen County 13-7 in the third quarter but still trailed 41-30 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter of play, the Eaglettes outscored Allen County 18-14 but ran out of time and lost 55-48.

Mika Davis led the Eaglettes with 16 points, and Christian chipped in 13 points. Mayla Clendenon and Scoggins each finished with 5 points, and Fredricks finished with 4 points. Sullivan added 3 points, and Sydney Bouldin rounded out the Eaglettes’ scoring with 2 points.

In the final game of the tournament, the Eaglettes fell behind early, trailing 22-9 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Eaglettes were outscored 13-10 and trailed Teays Valley Christian 35-19 heading into the half.

After halftime, the Eaglettes were outscored 20-13 in the third quarter and trailed TVC 55-32 heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Eaglettes were outscored 23-5 by TVC, and the Eaglettes lost to TVC 78-37.

Christian led the Eaglettes with 8 points, and Desarai Baker chipped in 7 points. Clendenon added 5 points. Chloe Hillis and Jadeah McCurry each finished with 4 points, and Sullivan ended the game with 3 points. Fredricks, Sierra DeLong, and Chloe Ragland rounded out the Eaglettes’ scoring, finishing with 2 points each.

The Eaglettes will compete Dec. 28-30 in the Best of Preps Holiday Basketball Tournament. The Eaglettes will play Dec. 28 against Baylor High School. Baylor is 7-5 on the season.
