Elizabeth Jane Thompson Bohannon

Elizabeth Jane Thompson Bohannon, 77, passed away Jan. 30, 2019, at her residence after a five-year battle with breast cancer.

Jane was born Oct. 6, 1941, in Sparta, to Herbert Brown Thompson and Elizabeth Cole Thompson, who proceeded her in death.

She retired from Findlay Elementary School after 30 years of teaching kindergarten and first grade. She formed close friendships with many of her co-workers that she carried throughout her life, still meeting them monthly for dinner, until her illness no longer allowed.

After retiring from school, she moved her home embroidery business to a small house on the Thompson family farm and expanded Bo-Tee’s Embroidery, where she continued to work another 19 years until her second retirement, in August 2017. She decided it was finally time to slow down and travel more, read more (if that was possible for her), and spend more time with her grandsons, Cole and Austin.

Jane, or Nane, as she was lovingly known by the boys and their friends, was a devoted grandmother. She never missed a football or basketball game – home or away. She taught the boys to swim in her pool. She was with them the first time they saw the ocean, and she took them on all their trips to Walt Disney World – and she rode the rides with them, too! Jane always said, “I’m not the granny who can make a homemade biscuit for them, but I can take them out to eat.” And, thus, Wednesday night family dinners at Yanni’s became a tradition that will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Sandra Bohannon, of Sparta; two grandsons, Cole Bohannon, Austin Bohannon both of Sparta; one sister, Mary Thompson Jones and husband Jack, of Sparta; one brother, Bill Thompson, of Sparta; sisters-in-law, Bill Powell Bohannon, of Sparta, Linda Bohannon Smith and husband Lloyd, of Nashville; nephews Jayson Bumbalough and wife Carrie, of Sparta, Pat Thompson and Joey Thompson, of Sparta; nieces, Mary Beth Jones Elrod and husband Anthony, of Sparta, Abby Thompson Sutton and husband Barry, of Georgia; several grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and her lifelong friend, Jo Nelda LaFever Cawthon, of Sparta, who was one of her beloved caregivers in the final months.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Feb. 2, 2019, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4-8 pm., Feb. 1, at the funeral home. Roy Whited will officiate.

Cole Bohannon, Austin Bohannon, Jayson Bumbalough, Mary Beth Jones Elrod, Pat Thompson, and Brock Cooper will serve as pallbearers.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hunter Funeral Home.

I can never remember a time when Jane did not have a smile on her face. It was such a pleasure to teach with her at Findlay Elementary School and she always lit up the room just by her happy disposition and very presence. May God wrap his loving arms around Mary, Todd, grandchildren and family.
