Fatality overnight in auto accident

A pedestrian was killed last night after being struck by a vehicle traveling on Roberts Matthews Highway.
At approximately 7:59 p.m., on Sept. 21, 2017, dispatchers at the White County E-911 Communications Center received notification about a possible incident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. The call stated the incident occurred on Roberts-Matthews Highway near the Jim Hennessee Road intersection.
NorthEnd Volunteer Fire Department, Sparta-White County Rescue Squad, White County Sheriff Department, White County Emergency Medical Service, and Tennessee Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found that a 2009 Volvo Sedan, which was reportedly driven by Anthony Lawson, 45, of Sparta, was involved in the incident with a pedestrian. Emergency personnel rendered aid on the scene to those involved and transported the pedestrian to a nearby hospital.
Emergency responders closed Roberts-Matthews Highway while the Tennessee Highway Patrol conducted its investigation.
According to the THP incident report, “Vehicle one was traveling northbound on Roberts Matthews Highway. The pedestrian was walking in the northbound lane.”
“The driver of vehicle one could not see the pedestrian in the roadway and struck him,” further stated the THP report.
The pedestrian, William Woody, 56, of Sparta, later died at the hospital from his injuries.
Lawson was reportedly uninjured during the incident and was wearing his seatbelt.
According to the THP, no citations or criminal charges have been issued. The THP investigation is reportedly closed.
