Coach Michael Dodgen, Coach Kellie Reed, and Coach Lynn Burkey talk with the girls at camp about skills necessary to be a successful player.

Although summer has not officially started, the Warriorettes were in summer training mode this past week

Coach Michael Dodgen and his staff had the Warriorettes practicing early in the mornings.  After practice this week, the girls’ basketball team helped with the annual Warriorette basketball camp for the local youth.  Dodgen, along with Coach Kelli Reed, put the campers through various drills that will help them develop the necessary skills needed to perform better on the court.  It is imperative that younger players use both left and right hands in ball handling skills as they develop.  Dodgen stresses hustle on all drills.

Emmie Benningfield goes through the camp drills.

These young ball players learned many drills they can take with them away from the camp and continue to practice the skills. Dodgen also stresses the mental aspect of the game and also having good sportsmanship on and off the court.  Character matters, and being a good citizen of the community and the classroom carries over onto the court.

There were guest speakers daily at the camp.  On Monday, Coach Lynn Burkey spoke to the campers about work ethic, practice routines, sportsmanship, and being a good teammate.

“Always have each other’s back,” Burkey stated.

Deandra Luna, former Warriorette basketball standout who now plays for Bryan College, was the guest speaker, on Thursday, at the camp.
