Grady Vaughn Sparkman

Grady Vaughn Sparkman, 90, went home to heaven on Jan. 25, 2013.
Born in Quebeck, Tenn., on April 28, 1922, Mr. Sparkman was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Virginia Hutchings Sparkman, for 70 years. Mr. Sparkman worked for Sparta Electric, Water and Sewer System, in Sparta, for 34 years, starting at the bottom and working his way up to manager.
Mr. Sparkman was a volunteer fireman more than 25 years. He was a member of the Civitan Club, Lions Club and the First United Methodist Church.
He and his wife were active band parents, managing the football and basketball concession stands for several years.
Mr. Sparkman retired in 1982, and the couple moved to N. Fort Myers, Fla. He was a member of McGregor Baptist Church. He and Mrs. Sparkman volunteered as couriers at Lee Memorial Hospital for 15 years. They also volunteered at their church’s food pantry and worked in the church kitchen and office.
Along with his wife, Mr. Sparkman is survived by their daughter, Denise Sparkman Plunkett, son-in-law Don and grandson Dylan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m., Feb. 2, at Hunter Funeral Home. Mr. Sparkman’s long-time friend and former employee, Hoyt Jones, of Sparta, will officiate. A memorial service will be held at McGregor Baptist Church in Ft. Myers, Fla., at 2 p.m., Feb. 9.
