James Herbert Simmons

Master Sgt. James Herbert Simmons, 88, passed away May 15, 2019, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Master Sgt. Simmons was born June 7, 1931, in Van Buren County, to Dennie Thurman Simmons and Irene Hollingsworth Simmons.

He was raised by his grandparents after his mother died when he was 2 months old. Master Sgt. Simmons retired from the U.S. Air Force after proudly serving his country during his 20-year career with the military. He taught woodworking for 17 years at the Vocational School for White County and was a member of the Holly Springs Church of Christ, in Livingston. He is best remembered as a soft-spoken, good man. He loved spending time with his wife of seven years, Anna Mae, at Dale Hollow Lake, followed by trips to Dairy Queen for ice cream.

Master Sgt. Simmons was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Carrie Simmons; brothers Junior, James Donald, Otis; and sister, Pearl Hash.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Anna Mae Simmons; stepdaughter, Diane Brady and husband Herman; step-grandchildren, Matt, Tamara, Beth, Allie; brother, Sherman Simmons and wife Agnes; and sisters-in-law, Carol Simmons and Margaret Simmons.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m., May 19, 2019, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Anderson Cemetery. Full military honors will be presented by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., May 18, at Hunter Funeral Home.

Mark Dial, Matthew Dial, Mike Simmons, Matt Brady, Jason Copeland and Ryan King will serve as pallbearers.

Hunter Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

    Great man, I was lucky enough to have woodworking shop 4 yrs in higj school, never a boren moment, He had alot to offer and teach.
    He was always well respected by his students.
