Spencer has a new barber in town, Jewel Larrinaga.
A year ago, Larrinaga relocated to Van Buren County with her boyfriend, Lawrence Bouchat, from Oklahoma. Since then a search of where to open up shop has been a priority for the couple.
After researching a number of potential available options, it was decided to purchase the lot at 240 College St., located near the Spencer square. With vision and determination, Bochat, a marine veteran, displayed his skills in construction and design to build a patriotic home for those seeking an old-fashioned hair cut.
Larrinaga, a certified master barber, brings over 19 years of experience of clipping to the neighborhood.
“I specialize in military style haircuts,” she explained, as she recalls the many years she spent keeping soldiers in compliance with regulations at Tinker, AFB. “I also do hot, straight razor shaves. I still love what I do, and I am proud to be a barber.
As someone who has served her community as a volunteer firefighter, Larrinaga remains connected by supporting first responders with a discounted rate of $8 per cut; this specialty rate is also available to current and veteran military personnel. The standard rate will be $10 per cut.
This little shop of haircuts is easy to spot while in Spencer. Red, white, and blue is on the metal roof and spiraling around the lighted barber pole at the entrance. The building is Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant and allows for easy access for persons who utilize mobility devices. Much of the structure is composed of recycled materials from area sources or purchased from local merchants.
Larrinaga is open for business and looks forward to meeting her neighbors. Stop by and get the true barber experience.
