Johnson tied for 8th after Day 1 of state
Shot a 76 on first 18
Despite a rollercoaster day on the Willowbrook Golf Course, White County High School senior golfer, Shelby B. Johnson, came into the clubhouse after day 1 of the TSSAA Class AAA state golf tournament in the top ten of the tournament.
Johnson finished the day with a 4-over 76 shooting a 38 on both the back and the front nine, which puts her in a two-way tie for eighth place.
Johnson, who started the day on number 10, got off to an auspicious start. After opening the day with a double bogey on the par 4 tenth hole, she birdied hole number 11, which is a par 3. She, however, followed that with a double bogey on number 12, a par 5.
She finished out the back nine with three pars, a pair of birdies and a bogey. That gave her a 2-over 38 on the back nine.
Johnson seemed to have her groove. On the final four holes on the back nine, she parred three and then headed into the break with a birdie.
The TTU signee began the front nine with five straight pars before bogeying holes six and seven. She rounded out the front in with pars on eight and nine to again shoot a 2-over 38.
The 76 puts Johnson in a two-way tie for eighth with 18 holes remaining. She is tied with Warren County’s Hannah Powell.
Johnson commented on her play on day one, “Today I struggled at the start, but managed to keep it together. I’m excited for tomorrow. I just need to focus on hitting greens in regulation and making a few putts.”
Check back to see how she fared on Wednesday.
