Mildred Ruth Scott Knowles, 91, of Walling, passed away March 9, 2018, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Born Monday, Jan. 24, 1927, in Sparta, she was the daughter of Thomas A. Scott Sr. and Janie Borden Scott.
Mrs. Knowles was a longtime member of Corinth Church of Christ. She owned and operated the Dilly Shop, in Sparta, for many years. After retirement, she spent time working in woodcrafts. Her interests were cooking, including her coconut cake, yellow cake, pecan pie, and many candies. She enjoyed the Shady Grove Community Group, which consisted of group dinner, card playing, square dancing, quilting, and gardening. Mrs. Knowles was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and DAR and really enjoyed attending Prime Time at Central Church of Christ. She worked with the commodities program and the Election Day process. She also worked in the Women’s Building at the White County Fair, where she won lots of ribbons for quilting, crocheting, and cooking.
Mrs. Knowles lived at home until just a few weeks ago and drove until the age of 90. As she became unable to quilt and garden, at age 87, she learned how to use an iPhone and an iPad to get texts and use Facebook.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, W.T. George Knowles Jr.; brother, Tommy Scott; and friend, who was like a brother, Herbert Johnson.
Survivors include her sons, Wesley Knowles (Bonnie), of Knoxville, Robert L. “Bob” Knowles (Debbye), of St. Louis, Kevin L. Knowles (Lisa), of Orlando, Florida; grandchildren, Robert Knowles, of Sparta, Chris Reed, of Prattville, Alabama, Cindy Sheldon, of Knoxville, Kery Seay, of Nashville, Mark Knowles, of Florida, Stephanie Knowles, of North Carolina, Alexis Walker, of Florida; and 16 great-grandchildren.
