It’s time again for the Million Dollar Mile Yard Sale. Kicking off at daylight on Oct. 6, the event will have vendors set up from Captain D’s, located on the corner of Bockman Way and Highway 111, all the way to Sparta Civic Center.
The original idea for the yard sale, started by Betty Hickey and Liz Allison, was to bring more business to the small business owners, in Sparta.
“Hardee’s, Captain D’s, and (Little Caesar’s) there on Bockman Way – they all tell me they make more money on that day than any other day of the year,” said Hickey.
Hickey also said she wanted to encourage more tourism, in Sparta, as well and felt that a huge yard sale would help bring more people into the community. In the past, there have been people selling yard sale items and food alike. According to officials at Sparta City Hall, anyone planning to sell food at the yard sale is required to obtain a permit and can do so by calling (931) 836-3248.
Hickey explained she makes it a point to find places that are free for people to set up their tables. She encourages vendors to make a small donation to offset the advertising costs.
“When people call to want to be a vendor, I usually tell them this,” said Hickey.
She stated that some business owners want a rent fee for vendors to set up in their parking lots. If vendors are adamant about setting up in a certain place that charges rent, Hickey tells them they will have to call the property owner themselves.
Vendors are still welcome and encouraged to call Aug. 31 if they want to participate.
