Six people sent to hospital after head-on crash

A Wednesday afternoon accident on Ray Broyles Road sent six people to the hospital, with four victims under the age of 12.
Kelly Throckmorton, 19, of Doyle, was traveling westbound on Ray Broyles Road in a 1987 Ford Escort GT. As Throckmorton approached a right hand curve in the roadway, he apparently crossed a wet area on the pavement. According to witnesses, the vehicle went into a slide. As a result, the Ford Escort crossed the center, double yellow line, striking a 1990 Ford Aerostar van traveling eastbound, driven by Jackie R. Pope, 25, of Sparta.

Surrounded by the muffled hush of filled bookcases at the White County Public Library, Library Director Cathy Taylor is truly in her element. With the printed word around her in multiple forms, Taylor, one of the library’s most vigorous supporters, thrives on all the institution has to offer both her and the residents of the county.
“I don’t ever remember not being able to read,” she said. “I enjoy books.”
Growing up surrounded by books in her home, Taylor pointed to the nearby reference stacks stating that when she was small, her parents had bookshelves “as tall as those.”

Lillian Cooper Ellis, 98, of Knoxville, formerly of Sparta, passed away Jan. 5, 2002, at Shannondale Health
Care Center in Knoxville.
Ellis was born April 22, 1903, in Pleasant Hill, to B. Cooper and Mary Pennington Cooper.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Sparta and was a member of the D.A.R. Ellis owned and operated Cumberland Furniture Company in Sparta for 44 years. She attended high school in Cookeville and Martin College in Pulaski.

Gannet Foundation donates $6,000+ to local library

The White County Library Foundation is proud to announce the receipt of a $6,300 grant made available to them by the Gannett Foundation, and the money is earmarked for furnishings for the Periodicals section of the new library.
The grant, submitted by the White County Library Foundation, requested $6,290 to cover the anticipated costs of new furnishings after careful research on the project.
The Gannett Foundation rounded up the award amount to an even $6,300.
The money will be held in a fund for the future library to be utilized when the new structure is completed.

Financial responsibility for drivers has arrived

Major changes for drivers began on January 1, 2002, due to the passing of an amendment to Tennessee’s financial responsibility law.
This amendment requires drivers to provide proof of financial responsibility when cited for any moving violation, auto accident or during roadblock checks of vehicle registration and license.
“The rush we are seeing now is the people that want to comply with the law,” said John Cheek of Cheek Insurance.
“Uninsured motorist coverage is one of the best coverages you can have for the dollar; we won’t write a policy without it.”

Barn destroyed by fire

Firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on Wilson-Brock Road. The barn, owned by Jerry Roberts, was a total loss.
BonDeCroft Fire Department arrived on the scene at approximately 9:05 a.m., Jan. 4, 2002, and found the barn totally engulfed in flames. Approximately six firemen worked together to extinguish the fire. Eastland Fire Department arrived at approximately 9:55 a.m. and lent their assistance. Corporal Joey Jones and Deputy Darren Gongaware of the White County Sheriff’s Department were also on the scene. Authorities were on the scene until approximately 10:30 a.m. The cause of the fire was unknown.

Dorothy Carter, 66, of Spencer, passed away Dec. 30, 2001, at White County Community Hospital.
Carter was born March 18, 1935, in White County, to Cordell Hull Carter and Maude Ellen Davis.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include one brother, Royce Carter of Lanesville, Ind.
Services were held at 11 a.m., Jan. 1, 2002, at the chapel of Thurman Funeral Home with burial in Rose Chapel Cemetery. Bro. Thomas Davis officiated.
